You can take the old one out and bring it with you to the hardware store to buy the new one. I believe they come in various sizes.
Change it approximately every couple of months or so, depending how dirty they get. It can depend on what style of filter it has but you'll see if there's lots of debris in it.
Go write down the make/model number of your furnace and have a look at the filter that's in there. If you can, pull out the existing filter and put it in a sealed plastic bag to bring with you. Filters tend to come in a lot of shapes and sizes! I think you're supposed to change them twice a year. I'm a bad source of info on that part, our house has electric baseboard heaters! I'm just going off what I remember from trying to help DH find filters for his mom's furnace. You might want to search online for them, I think he found better deals that way.
This isn't a one size fits all deal. Check your furnace out and see what the old one is. I only change ours twice a year, it doesn't need more than that. Most are part of your ventilation system so I change it when we turn our heat on and then again when we turn our air on.

I know I need to change the furnace filter, but I have never done it. Any particular kind/size I should buy? How do I change it? How often? Thanks!
