Future Husband wants to keep Mother's last name

@PrettyCow:  Hi there. Maybe you could explain the culture from which this is being derived and what the norms are there. In the US, most men and women take their father’s last name and there is rarely discussion of taking the mother’s name. How does it work in your culture? Knowing this will help us give you better feedback.

ETA: What is your FH’s last name right now? His mother’s or his father’s?

@PrettyCow:  Ok, thanks for the added information. I was unsure if this was the result of a different culture (latino) or the result of divorced parents.

My recommendation for you in supporting your husband would be to state what you’ve said above — your MIL’s last name is less common, she comes from a wonderful, loving family, she gave your FH so much love and affection, etc. I’d wrap it up by iterating how hard this must be for your FH to decide but that whatever he decides, you are sincerely alright with since, as you say, you have already prepared to take on a new last name.
