This is going to sound extremely silly .. but just want to make sure .. if you go ahead and order now then you can still use them because they are "forever". I thought I had heard somewhere that they were doing away with those.
These are the ones we are using:
You can still use those stamps but as postage is going up, you will still have to make up the difference. Buying those stamps now wont save you any money unfortunatley. I thought they would and then the woman at the post office informed me as to how wrong I was... sadly.
I haven't heard anything about them doing anyway with them- I searched it just now and they seem to still be "forever" :) I would think no matter what they'd have to honor them or at least give you a long long time to use them up, in case you stock piled them!
so they will have 1 cent stamps to use to add to those .. i already purchased some for STD and had approx 40 left over .. but I'm NOT sending out invitations before the end of January
Why wouldn't buying the forever stamps now at the current rate save me money? If I pay the current price now, and put them on my invitations later- then am I not saving the difference in postage between the new price and the old one?
So, If I mail something with a 2011 Forever stamp, it will still be good after January 22nd, correct? This is what the post office told me....
@bestwishes: me too.....I have not been a bridezilla yet, but she will come out tomorrow at the post office if need be....I stamped AND sealed all of my invites today with the Forever stamp.......
If you have a regular stamp you would have to make up the difference. If you buy forever stamps you won't. The liberty bell is a forever stamp, so it's always good no matter what the current price of stamps are.
@bestwishes: Looks like it is a forever stamp since it says forever at the top.
Yes, and you can use it forever as long as what your mailing is not going international and does not weigh more then 1 ounce
My post office told me if iI buy a forever stamp before 1/22,I can put them on my invitations in June and not pay any more. They said that is the theory behind the "forever" stamp, that they will be good forever no matter how high postage may go.
Hoping my weight of the invitation stays down and I can get away sending them at regular rate
@xokaleneox: From what she told me, you would still be required to pay the difference.
As long as the postage says, "FOREVER" it is allowed to be mailed today or in 2020 (assuming USPS still exists). There are a few that are subject to change and those have numbers on them. The personalized ones from Zazzle are not FOREVER, so you'd have to add postage to make it equivalent to the current price.
@Ms Hedgehog: She told you that? See I have heard the opposite. From even the post office employees. Ive heard that u can use it and dont have to add extra stamps as the price goes up. Infact from what I heard, thats why they made forever stamps in the first place. To make it easier for the transition from the old price to the new price.
Well, Im gonna go to the post office and doublecheck. Just to make sure.
Forever stamps will be worth 1st class postage forever. So theoretically you can buy 1,000 of them now and mail 1,000 letters when you're 94 years old and the postage is $6 per letter (exaggerating, but you see the point). The should honor them forever (theoretically) but if they ever do decide to stop honoring them, they'll give LOTS of notice so you can use them up before they stop accepting them.
Postcards, however, use $.29 cent stamps currently and will go up to $.32. There is no forever postcard stamp, so ask about purchasing $.32 postcard stamps if you'll be expecting them to be mailed after 1/22/11. We sent invites out in mid-Dec but RSVP postcards aren't due until 2/9, so we had to add the ugly $.03 stamp to each postcard to ensure it got to us after 1/22. So don't stock up on the old ones unless you want to add the extra postage stamp.
From the USPS website:
"The Forever stamp will always be valid as First–Class postage on standard envelopes weighing one ounce or less, regardless of any subsequent increases in the First–Class rate. The stamp art depicts the Liberty Bell, which is perhaps the most prominent and recognizable symbol associated with American independence. Over the years, the historic significance of the bell’s message has transcended our national borders, and today the Liberty Bell is an international icon of freedom. Replicas of the Liberty Bell exist in all fifty states and the District of Columbia."
@Ms Hedgehog: Hi! I just spoke to a postal worker and had visted in person and they both said that the forever stamps we have now are good forever without having to add any postage. If we want to buy forever stamps after 1/22, then they cost an extra penny but there's no need to add a stamp to what we have already. Hope this helps as well:)

Going to the post office tomorrow to get forever stamps for STD/invitations/response card/thank you cards :)
Regular stamps will be going up 1 cent (44 to 45)
Postcard stamps will be going up 3 cents (from 29 to 32), just fyi- apparently unless you mail out your stuff before 1/22 with the old stamps you'll have to put on additional postage anyway :(
Depending on how many people you are inviting, it could add up!
