They usually only need to do root canals if your root is damaged or infected, they should be able to fix this with a crown or something, but they may need to grind your tooth down a bit first.
I don't think it involves the root. there's no real pain (yet) and it's a new filling (6 months or so?) so I don't think it's infected or anything. Fingers crossed!
It sounds like you just need the filling replaced.
Sometimes if you break off the filling and part of your tooth (especially with deep fillings on molars), then a crown or a root canal is needed depending on how much tooth has broken off.
Hi! I ended up needing a crown. I broke off the front corner of my #2 molar (second from back on top right), exposing the filling. I have a temporary crown right now and I am getting the permanent one in a couple of weeks. It'll be a while before I eat popcorn again!

I need advice from the bees with dental experience... i know there are some!
Snacking on some popcorn tonight and I broke my tooth! I have a filling in a top molar and when I crunched down on a not-quite-popped piece the outer shell of the tooth broke and now the sharp edge and filling material are exposed from the side.
My question is: do you think I'll have to have a root canal for this or will they be able to patch it or something? I am obviously going to call my dentist ASAP in the morning.
Thanks!
