My husband and I love a good game night with friends - we have this one couple we hang out with most weekends and we have been stuck playing the same games over and over again. They are tons of fun and i highly recommend them to anyone but i'm starting to get sick of them and need some new games to play.
so here are the two we have been playing that I LOVE (in case you want to run out and buy them haha) phase 10 is sort of like rummy with a twist and pick two is sort of like scrabble except each player has their own board rather than playing on one center board.
but i need some new ideas. do you do game nights too? what are your favorite board/card/party games?
We do game nights with some of my co-workers pretty frequently. It's usually a bigger group (6-8) but I think you could play some of these games with 4 people.
- Catch Phrase
- Cranium
- Trivial Pursuit (specifically the new "You Can Bet On It" version because you can buy wedges with chips you earn by betting on other people in the game so you don't even have to know too much trivia!)
- Apples to Apples
- Loaded Questions
- Balderdash
Smart Ass! DH picked it up at Target one night, completely randomly, and now it's our favorite board game. No one has ever heard of it but everyone loves to play it once they start! It's fun, a little challenging and the rules are really easy. It's a great game to play with 4 players or even more.

DH and I love board games! Some of our favorites are:
-Munchkin
-Carcassonne
-Betrayal at House on the Hill (AMAZING in a big group)
-Life
I realize some of these aren't very common but trust me they are amazing games for groups of people.
Our go to Game Night game is Apples to Apples! Pretty much whenever we have a big get together with our friends, we all know it's going to be broken out at one point in the night.
We always bring Catch Phrase, it's a great go-to game--especially if you have some friends who don't know each other. It always makes everyone laugh, especially after a few drinks!
@DaneLady: @future_schu: @twodoghouse: Love apples to apples! I always get a kick out of it. Best when played with people with a great sense of humor!
@PitBulLover: I am so going to buy this game! with a name like that how can it not be fun?
@MrsDibs: Def going to check out Betrayal at House on the Hill! sounds so interesting!
Aw! We miss game night!!! We used to have friends, and after we moved we just haven't really made any :( We do play with my bro and sister-in-law sometimes. Our favorites are:
Settlers of Catan, Taboo, Spades and Boggle. DH loves Cranium, too.
ETA: Balderdash is super fun, too!!
@Ms. Gremmlin: I just recently play settlers for the first time - time consuming but so much fun!
These are great suggestions ladies! you are giving me some great ideas...keep them coming!
Fluxx is great! We love Phase 10 too and I feel like they would appeal to similar audiences.
I also second PP's Apples to Apples and Taboo recommendations.
We'd like to get a game night once a month or something too! that'd be fun.
I'm a big Scrabble fan but that's not probably the best for groups.....
Depending on your circle....playing Apples to Apples with a dirty mind is hilariously fun,
Others we have/like to play:
Sequence
Chinese Checkers
Five Crowns (card game)
Farkle
Catch Phrase or Charades are great breaking the ice games too!
@Ms. Gremmlin: SPADES!!!!! We LOVE spades. Whenever we get together with DHs family we always play several games of spades. Wish we knew more spades players!
@PitBulLover: haha! I've been playing since I could hold cards in my hands!!!! It's definitely a family fave! I never meet any young folk who like to play. Canasta is another one we play, but people always tell me it's for old women...
@hisgoosiegirl: I agree about Sequence. It's surprisingly addictive!
We also love Apples to Apples and Scattegories. :)
Can someone explain Munchkin? I keep hearing about it but have no idea what it is!
@Gemstone: my sister and I were playing it one time and my mom came in and wanted to play. We said she could once we got done with that round, and she didn't like that so she blew all coins off the board. It was one of the most childishly funny things I've ever seen her do.
@hisgoosiegirl: Hahahaha! The way I'm imagining this in my head is hilarious.
Have you ever played it with teams (so, four people total)? It's crazy!
I love game nights!
I second Apples to Apples, Scattagories, Cranium, etc.
We also love What? and Three Round Noun.
I think we made up that last one with friends so I'll explain super quick: You divide the group into 2 teams, and everyone writes down nouns on scraps of paper. It can be anything - celebrity names, events in the news, random, as long as it's a noun. Depending on the size of the group, decided how many nouns you write down each. You want about 40-50 clues I'd say. The three rounds are Taboo (can't say the word, get your team to guess), Charades (no talking, act it out), and One Word (obvious - say one word only related to clue). You take turns by team, you have a minute to guess as many as possible. When you run out of clues, move on to the next round. You can pass three times, and at the end of the minute put any unguessed clues back in the bowl. Team with the most points at the end wins.... hope that makes sense!
It's so much fun, especially with my group of friends who seems to consist of men with the mentality of 15 year old boys. Lots of inappropriate sex jokes! But hilarious... and it could be anything, too. I've played tamer versions with my parents.
Has anyone played Quelf? My SIL got it for our NYE party and we tried playing it but it was sooo bad. Which was weird because the commercial made it seem fun.
@Gemstone: Oh yes, there were four kids in my family so that's usually how we played. There was to be no 'table talk' so there were lots of winks, kicks under the table, and that sort of stuff. It was a lot of fun! That and five crowns were DH's initiation into my family. The first night he came to my house, my siblings (all younger than me) stayed up with us until 2am playing card games, totally blowing his curfew.
I always loved that excuse, no mom, we weren't making out, we were playing card games with her 11 year old brother!
@Catherine: we played that with my cousin and her DH this summer! I was trying to remember what she called it! I think her version was slightly different....can't remember if round three was one word or charades, but it was so much fun! We played guys vs. girls, so the guys had all sports clues and Star Wars stuff.
@.twist.: I was just going to suggest Things! We love that game, so much fun and it can be played with family or drinking with friends.
I LOVE appleas to apples and cranium. We also have one called "like minds" that's kind of fun.
One more off the beaten path game that I really like is officially called "bohnanza", but our group just refers to it as "beans". It's kind of a strategy card game, with trading which is always fun to try to work out "fair" deals.
I love Spades :). I'll have to agree with Apples to Apples. Also, there's this game called Killer Bunnies, I suck at it, but it's fun! I wouldn't say no to Dirty Minds either ;)
@brittsnead23: Totally! it's actually our most favorite and we have so many hilarious memories from it (especially from the drinking with friends nights, haha!). I usually suggest it to anyone and everyone.
@.twist.: i love things! So fun!
@hisgoosiegirl: Yea, I've seen a few different versions. We usually do guys vs. girls too, but the guys always have the most random clues! You just need to try and remember them after the first round because sometimes you take out that slip of paper and the clues are so obscure!
@PitBulLover: We played it at a friend's house once. It was ok, but nothing special. I spent a long time in a tent I had to build out of assorted things found around the living room, haha. (I think, like many of these games, that it improved with drinking!)
@Catherine: Things you shouldn't keep in your pockets? lulz! ;)
@hisgoosiegirl: you know, i've had sequence sitting in my closet unopened since last christmas! (not this past christmas) i'm going to have to give it a shot - i almost forgot i even had it.
@totheislnds: Definitely do! Ours is still unwrapped from the wedding (whoops) which is why we need to make friends.......so we can play it!
@PitBulLover: We play Smart Ass too! We also own Quelf but I agree - that game is kind of odd.
I love game nights with friends and we ALWAYS host because DH and I have a crap-ton of board games! Other favorites are:

@secondchances: What's Your's Like is highly entertaining. DH and I have that one too! :)
@.twist. DH and I play "Things" with his family every time his grandparents come into town. It's sooo funny. DH isn't a big fan of word games, but he likes that one. Lately we've been playing the game "Logos" with his parents quite a bit. We like Sequence a lot too!
secondchances, I was at the store the other day and couldn't remember what game I had wanted to buy. It was "What's yours like?" Lol, thanks for the reminder!
I love all the suggestions here! DH and I love games, and I'm definitely going to check out some of these. Our favorite right now is Flip Out. It's so much fun! And I love that I usually beat DH.
