@mamadingdong:  Because only black people can like hip hop or be “gangsta?” (Or because obviously, all black people are in gangs, thus gansta style is obviously a realistic representation of black culture?) Please. Where I come from, gangsta folks come in all colours.

@chercee:  +1. As if the race card got played so quickly!

@theEguarantee:  I love that you went untraditional with your card! People take these things far too seriously.

The dreaded race card. Sorry to rain on the what’s funny to white people parade and if gangsta rap is not predominately associated with black culture over white culture then I guess I missed the memo.

Here’s a recent article about everyone’s favorite Miley. Hers is overdone with videos and whatnot but the idea is the same. Using things from black culture like grills and gold chains to represent yourself as black. I’m sure there’s no harm intended, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be offensive.

But blackness is not a piece of jewelry you can slip on when you want a confidence booster or a cool look.

Miley and her ilk need to be reminded that the stuff they think is cool, the accoutrements they’re borrowing, have been birthed in an environment where people are underprivileged, undereducated, oppressed, underrepresented, disenfranchised, systemically discriminated against and struggling in a system set up to insure that they fail.

it’s important to understand that Miley is very privileged to be able to play dress up and adorn herself with the trappings of an oppressed/minority culture. She can play at blackness without being burdened by the reality of it.

Fwiw, I saw “one love” and thought of Macklemore, the obviously white rapper who I don’t think appropriates other cultures for his music… (Even though I know his song is same love, it’s still what came to mind!)

Also, I think the card is funny and would laugh if I received one!

@mamadingdong:  So? Just saying it’s what I thought of  – I know what he looks like :). We can’t help how we initially react to something, much like you were immediately offended at a perceived appropriation and I… Immediately thought of a white rapper from Seattle who’s not gangster enough, but also causes no offense. So maybe that’s a reason I am not all up in arms about this, because my perception of the card is different than yours – and maybe that’s why others feel that’s it’s not a big deal either.

Also for what it’s worth, I agree with you about Miley, but I don’t think that this is the same. I work in ethnic differences research so I am not blind to microaggressions, but this seems pretty innocent. To each their own.

Anyway, not going to contribute to taking this thread off the rails anymore – I just thought it was a funny card and made me think of one of my favorite, albeit non-gangsta, rappers!

@mamadingdong:  What if OP and her SO were black but not gangstas in real life? Would you still find this offensive?
