i’m having a ceremony in a garden and don’t want a carpet or anything laid out on the ground. how do you avoid grass stains on the wedding dress hem? also, i want to wear shoes with heels but i don’t want to be "airing" the ground, either. (hmmm, just realized maybe i can wear wedges, duh!) is this a price i have to pay for walking down the "green aisle"?
are there other options besides a carpet/runner?

I am doing the same thing as you. You could wear wedges, but make sure you think through the length of your dress in relation to the height of your shoes. You don’t want a gap between the ground and the bottom of your dress, or at least not a big one (where big = 1 inch), because it will look like your dress was hemmed too short.
My take on it is, if you don’t want an aisle runner or something on the ground, then your dress is going to touch the grass. It may get grass stained, it may not… but honestly, by the end of your wedding day, the hem of your dress will be a little bit dirty anyway. A good dress cleaner should get the stains out. I say walk down the aisle the way you’ve always envisioned it and don’t worry if you get a small grass stain. It really won’t be noticeable to your guests and can be cleaned out later.

I used straw mats for my runner! I was too paranoid about mud after my brother’s insanely muddy wedding the year before us.
You can get the basic idea here:
