I just bought a garter set for the wedding…I showed it to a few of my friends and they all said “Why does it have two?” I explained what I thought (which is that one is for tossing and one is for keeping) and they all said they thought you keep the garter that’s tossed as well.
How does this really work? It seems weird someone would keep it…lol but they do all come in sets of two…

You are correct that one is to toss and one is to keep on. Yes maybe the tossed one comes back to you but maybe it gets ripped or dirty, etc so one is the toss and the other stays on until your groom removes it after the wedding.

I don’t think you always get the tossed one back. Just like you might not get a tossed bouquet back.

I did not get my tossed garter back (and didn’t expect too).
But I still have my keepsake garter!

I didnt get my garter back (I only had one) but I know who caught it and it was put on the girl who caught the bouquet and I know she still has it. Its not that hard to track down if you want to!

One is to keep and the other for the garter toss. I wouldn’t ask for it back if I only had one, its the guests to keep I would think.

Hmmm…okay that’s what I thought…anyone else think it’s weird for whatever guy who catches it to keep it?? lol. I guess I find them sort of intimate so I think it’s weird a guy would want to keep mine.

I’ve never seen anyone give back a bouquet or garter, once it’s tossed. Isn’t that the whole point, to toss them? Meanig, give them away. Don’t expect to get either of these things back. I agree that it’s weird to have some random dude keep your garter, but that’s the tradition… and another reason why we’re not doing it.

I didn’t get mine back. I threw it, and my husband’s married aunt jumped in an caught it (I was kind of annoyed), and then it kind of got passed around and people were wearing it on their heads, and sling shotting it around the room. It was pretty much trashed by the end of the night.
Joke’s on them though… It was 38 (almost 100F) degrees that day. I wouldn’t have been putting that sweaty thing on my head. Gross.

Yeah, you have it right. I wouldn’t even want it back after it had been handled my a bunch of guys… I just don’t trust those bachelors!
