its kind of a cross between the two. It’s a polish that hardens with a UV light. Mine last about 2-3 weeks. They’re amazing.

@MlleBrielle is right.  They last a super long time.  Only down side is that most salons don’t carry too many of the colors so there isn’t as big of a selection.  I plan on getting one for my wedding day. I am hard on my nails and chip regular manicures within a day or two normally.

They don’t drill or file your nails down as much as acrylics, so it’s better for your nail strength in that sense. I love it, but I agree with PP that all salons don’t carry as many colors as I’d like. Removal is a little difficult on your own, too.

I heard that are great because they are strong and last long, but the removal is really harsh on your nails…I’m not sure what I’d like to do.

I’ve gotten gel manicures twice.  Both times I got a really pale pink so I wouldn’t get sick of the color. The first time it was beautiful!  Loved it. My nails felt strong and looked great.  After about two weeks I went I to get my brows done and decoded to get the geL redone.  The removal felt really bad on my nails.  They felt weak and thin.  The woman finished and when I got home I noticed what a bad job she’d done. It was like pooled around the edges and really thick.   Needless to say I refused to go back there and get it removed. I took it off after about a week and it took over a month for my nails to be back to normal.

It looks great when it’s on but I’ll never do it again just for regular life.  I think it’s too damaging.  Now when it’s wedding/honeymoon time it’d be great to not have to worry about nails.

@Southerngirl4234:  I think gel looks better because they aren’t so thick.  No one will know you have a gel manicure.  They’ll just think you have great nails!   I found that my nails grew because they weren’t as brittle but it won’t be insta-growth like with acrylic.

I only get gel manicures with white tips… but I’ve never had them removed… I always just let them grow out naturally and do a clear gloss on the new growth. No one ever notices.
