Aw, it's too bad you didn't find the type of gems you were looking for. My parents go to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show every February. http://www.tgms.org/2012show.htm A bunch of my relatives save up all year and travel from CA to AZ and have a great time. I love it because I always get some awesome presents! They found mine and my husbands wedding bands last year, and other years I got diamond earrings, a circle diamond pendant, an aquamarine and diamond halo pendant, pearl strands, bracelet, and studs. Plus there's all kinds of "fun" jewelry, too. My DH and I are going to go with them one year, if our schedule ever allows! You should check it out if you are ever in AZ in February.!
Thank you! That is doable in the future. Maybe next year my SO and I can go, because around then we should actually be heading more directly towards engagement. We'd like to be together for 3-3.5 years before getting engaged and only have 2 years under our belt so far and finances are pretty tight right now too.

Soo... yesterday my SO and I went to our first Gem Faire.
It was not what either of us were really expecting, more beads than anything else.
There were some great druzys and crystals but not as many gems as we were hoping for.
My SO was expecting a high-end jewelry show.
I was expecting more jewelers to be there with higher quality merchandise and loose stones.
What we saw:
Booths full of strands of beads
Some jewelry but most of it was not to my taste (a lot of dipped in gold jewelry) not so much silver/white gold.
Some very "fake" looking stones (i.e too much coating on the glass beads).
Anyway, while we didn't find anything for me- except things out of my price range or just too low of quality- we did find some beads we're going to sew to our cats' collars... yay! But that was after about an hour and a half of looking and finding nothing. My SO doesn't really like polished stones- which I do, so we compromised and I got what I wanted for my cat and he got what he liked for his.
He was bored about 20 mins into being there though- so I promised I wouldln't bring him again.
We managed to walk out spending a grand total of $5... entrance fee was waived because of the Chinese New Year :)
