So my family is celebrating Thanksgiving on Wednesday.  We want to reveal the gender in a semi-comical way.  The main idea is to have the family think we are not sharing the news until the weekend, but then at the end of the night we will do a casual "oh, golly gee, we hid a message in the..."

Now my family is chaotic and non-formal.  So even semi-crude jokes will be just fine!  For the meal, we are in charge of desserts.  No one eats cake, we just don't like it.  Yes, we are slightly odd.

Our original plan was to make some pumpkin and/or banana bread.  We would use small loaf pans and slice the bread, arranging it on a platter.  In the middle of the platter would be a small decorative pumpkin (real or fake).  Towards the end of the night, we would casually mention that the bottom of the pumkin was painted pink or blue.  My mom and sister will likely topple over eachother to get to it first.

My worry with this is that the pumpkin will roll over prematurely, or it will just look odd.

Then I got this brilliant (haha) idea to bring a small stuffed animal turkey.  I would just sort of plop it down somewhere as a decoration.  Then at the end of the night I would say "oh yeah, the turkey is stuffed!"  I will have cut a small hole in the turkey's ass and stuffed an "it's a...." message inside.  My husband hates this idea!

Then we got the fortune cookie idea.  I could either make some and have one (or all) say the gender.

Now, I know these ideas seem a little self-promoting.  But the thing is, due to the fact that we have 2 infant boys already (or coming soon), my family is just dying to know.  So having it be a "fake-casual" big deal is perfect for them.

Any other ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!

this does not really fit into a thanksgiving theme or even a joke or anything but i always thougth it was neat - maybe you could be like i have a surprise for you guys - and give them this wrapped up? with a pink or blue balloon

this may be a stupid idea, but what if you got blocks like this - or even those letter magnets and just put it somewhere in the house and see how long it takes for someone to notice and bring it up

I love the cupcake fillers. I know you said your family doesn't eat cake though.

What about hiding a baby in a pie (like they do in New Orleans) and one lucky person gets a plastic baby in their slice? You could paint the baby blue or whatever.

What about hiding something in a part of the bread. You can mention that the secret is in one of the slices? I can see everyone digging into their bread hoping to find the secret!

I like the idea of hiding something in plain sight and bringing it up after dinner. And having around make a mad dash around the house to find it!

    @totheislnds:

I LOVE those cupcakes! I've been thinking of having the gender reveal at my shower with cupcakes. Love the ? mark idea on the top of the cupcake.

I don't have any ideas but I LOVE the cupcakes.  However when DH and I have more kids we plan on being team green so we don't get to do something cool like this.  Oh well.  lol

We're going to do the old cake standby at our Christmas Party on the 3rd, but I agree that you should do something Thanksgiving-y.

Wracked my brain and I got nothing. Maybe someone is more creative than I am.

Yes, I agree! I've heard that you can bake fortune cookie style papers into crescent rolls. Cute!

what if you hide a fortune into the bread-- someone might eat it or might get grossed out and then you can say "read it!"

If I did the fortune cookies, what should the other fortunes say?

I like all of the ideas! if you do the fortune cookie, you could say something like:

"There is lots of PINK/BLUE in your future"

"You will soon fall in love with a baby BOY/GIRL"

"The month of DUE DATE will be filled with PINK/BLUE"

Speaking of your stuffed turkey idea, Build-A-Bear is a great option. I checked the website and unfortunately they dont have a plush turkey, but I'm sure you can get a bear and dress him in "Thanksgiving attire." Then you can record your voice on this little heart shaped recorder and have it put inside the bear. That way whenever someone squeezes that section they will hear your voice saying "Its aGirl/Boy." and you wont have to butcher a plush toy to get to your surprise.

@MrsDiddles:  "butcher a plush toy"  haha...I love that because I actually would feel bad slicing the poor guy up!!  I seriously feel like stuffed animals have feelings too.  I think I have issues.  I did think about a recordable type thing though.

I love "hide the baby" in the pumpkin bread! Like the King's Cake for Mardi Gras, just hide little pre colored baby related items in the bread when you bake it. Just make sure they're bake-able.

I know that I read somewhere that you can microwave fortune cookies to loosen them up and switch the fortunes out.  If you are anything like me in pregnancy, the less work, the better!

this may look wierd but could you use food coloring and make the stuffing inside the turkey Blue or Pink? then you could have someone scoop the stuffing out and everyone would wonder why its pink or blue until they figure it out
