The wedding budget was $5000. Both of our parents thought it was overly ambitious, and it turns out they were right, since we are right now, $540 over-budget.
Thus, comes the hair question: should I get a pro to do my hair? (Cost: $95 for day of, $95 for trial).
We would be able to afford it. But I just hate the idea of being more than 10% over-budget. I’m very conscious of budget, and do not like spending a ton of money without cause.

@Double_rainbow: I also did not want to pay for hair, however I am sooooo glad I did. If you can afford it, do it!

No way! You don’t want that added stress the day of. I think hair is a necessary expense, and I would have happily cut something else from my budget to get my hair done professionally.

your not going to want to deal with that stress the day of the wedding. allow someone to pamper you!

I am going to say it depends on how difficult you hair is to handle.
I did my own hair on my wedding because I had wanted something super-simple anyway. Basically I just had my hair in a bun which I have done before. It took me all of 10 minutes and added no stress. Also I just did not think that my hair would look that much difference even if it was done by a pro if it’s just a simple bun.

I’m with PPs who say it depends on your hair. I have a pixie cut, so I’m not going to pay for anyone to “do” my hair – though I had to do that at a wedding I was in (bride required hair and makeup, not worth the fight over it) and it was so irritating having someone try to “do” my cut. I looked like a punk rocker.

I think it totally depends on you and your ability and budget.
We are low-budget, but even if we weren’t, I’d still do my own hair and makeup. Why? Because I’m a part time makeup artist and my hair is just going to be down, MAYBE half up, and I can handle it.

@Double_rainbow: It depends, do you have the products and equipment to do your own hair? If so, I would probably go DIY. I had my hair professionally done because it would’ve cost more for me to purchase the equipment and supplies (I don’t even own a hairbrush).

I don’t trust anyone with my hair. I think for ME it would just add on more stress. I have the type of “ethnic” hair many people cannot handle. Plus I live in a town with very limited population of people that can handle it.

Hmm. Maybe I’ll check out some youtube videos and try some updo’s tonight, and if it seems absolutely hopeless, I’ll stick with a pro.

I think we need more details about your hair, your desired hairstyle, and your skill level to be able to answer your question.

@Double_rainbow: Don’t do the trial, but definitely get it done day-of! Unless you want SERIOUSLY complicated hair, or live in the stck-in-1985-middle-of-nowhere, you’ll be fine!
