I just used my marriage certificate, but my marriage certificate shows both my old name and ‘name after marriage’

Hmm. They told me to put my old name and the name I would be using after marriage on the certificate.

@MrsBeck: Nope, they will ask you there to confirm that is what you would like your new name to be. It was pretty easy and painless. I also had my old license still and was able to do it with just the marriage certificate! The new card came within like 5 days too which was cool.

@MrsBeck:  Just to make sure.. On the form it says to put name that will be shown on new card .. Did you put your first name and new last name? If yes, then you did it correct! I had to go back and look at the form to refresh my memory.

@MrsBeck:  marriage certificate is fine as it has your maiden name, and the name you wish to change it to (your husbands).

ETA – my marriage certificate only had my maiden name not my new name and it works fine.  You don’t need something that says your first and new last name.

@MrsBeck:  Yah it’s all kind of confusing, but you’ll be fine! Your marriage license is your ticket to all your name changes and proof of old and new name!

I got married in Virginia but it didn’t list my new name at all – just had my husband’s last name and my maiden name. That was enough. I wrote his last name as my last name on the application you have to fill out to get the new card & the only document I needed was my marriage license.
