I find this to be really interesting as well. For months, I’ve been hearing about how interval training can be really beneficial, and since I was starting to get really board with my 20 mins on the eliptical/30 mins on the treadmill routine, I decided to give it a shot. Once or twice a week, on the days I’m in a hurry, I’ll go on the treadmill for 30 mins, and I’ll sprint really fast for 5-6 minutes, and walk up hill for 7-8 mins. Then repeat until my 30 mins is up.

I’ve found that it helps with muscle definition and also really gives me a great workout in just 30 mins!

The rest of gym days, I stick  to my eliptical/long jog routines.
