Hallo! I am ordering my dress online, (I know, scary... ^^) the dressmaker needs my measurements before she makes the dress so I will be going to a seamstress to get me some professioanl measurements... Now... What should I wear? ...

The shoes I will be wearing the day of. Check.

That's all I know, I mean I don't know what undergarments I will be wearing because its a satin dress so most things show through. I have one strapless bra... the back is a little big on me but the cup fits... but it IS a halter dress so I will be able to wear a strap if needed. Do I wear that bra?

    Loose clothes or tight?

    Jeans or slacks?

Any other advice? Its really important I get the RIGHT measurements, I am runninng out of time and if the dress isn't right when it comes in I may be in some trouuuuble.

If I were you, I'd go to like Victoria's Secret and have them give you your bust size, and then maybe get a nude colored strapless bra that you could wear, and get measured in that. I'd also say wear fitted clothes so the loose fabric doesn't factor into your measurement. Will you not be able to get the dress altered?

ETA: Oh yeah, if you're going to wear Spanx, then you should probably be wearing that too. Good luck!

When measuring yourself, don't wear anything but the undies you'll be wearing day-of. And the shoes.

As for the bra...try to get as close to the bra size, amount of padding, and amount of support (don't worry about decorations or lacies) as the one you'd like to wear for the wedding. You can pick out another bra, one that doesn't show through fabric, later, as long as it is similar to the one you measured in.

Honestly, unless the straps hold your boobs a different way than a strapless would, I would just measure with a strapped bra that you feel fits you well and gives a good bust profile. Then you can find a strapless or long-line bra that fits the same way later on.

    Hope this helps!!

If you are taking your own measurements I'd recommend doing it in a strapless bra and spanx. Do not take measurements over clothes as that will add inches that just need to be taken in later.

WHOOPS! I didn't see the "going to a seamstress part." Yea probably should take some clothes for modesty's sake!!! Loose-fitting, thin fabric.

Ok so I've gotten measured at Victoria's secret three times and each time they give me a different measurement. And my weight has been the same so...? I dunno what's up with them.

And I haven't found any spanx I like... I have a very hourglass shape I just need to be more toned (and lose some weight obvio) but most of those all over shapers I swear they make me look chubbier! They push my love handles up and make my waist actually look bigger than it is and give me no shape. And I have a big chest with a smaller waist so its just a mess... its really hard for me to find undergarments and especially with a satin fabric. I feel as if I dug myself a hole.

But yes, I should still be able to get alterations after, I'd just hate to be like... wearing the wrong bra, and then my chest was sized too small and then the dress comes in and I'm poppin' outta the damn thing.

You need to get all the undergarments you will be wearing the day of.

If you're not sure what to get go to your nearest bridal shop and ask what will work so it doesn't show through.. they may be able to refer you to a professional fitting shop (for undergarments)

We took one of my BM to one so she could get the right size bra.. (you'd be surprised how wrong most places get it... including Victoria Secret)

    Also get your petticoat.

Wear EVERYTHING you'd wear under you dress on the day of.

This ^ is what you will get fitted in for your dress measurements =)

@Adriana.Niva: Many moons ago I worked at VS and they just give you super general guidelines on how to fit people, so if a fitter is math-challenged like I am, you don't get very accurate measurements. So don't go by that.

Don't feel like you have to wear shapers (they don't really work for me either, all the fat migrates to my thighs, ugh). Try a nude-colored bra with minimal seam lines to go under the satin.

    @amnystik:THANK YOU

@MsJeep23:I really think that's what I'm leaning to, I'm just afraid that tiny little pouch I have on my lower stomach will make me look preggers in my wedding pictures!!

What about something like this? Do you think the bottom would slide up? http://www.whatkatiedid.us.com/public/product.php?fes_prd_id=520

And if any of you know a place I can find a GOOD convertible bra with DD - DDD size chest that, ahem, 'lifts and seperates' I don't want pornstar uniboob cleavage :(

    P.S.

I love you guys for helping a wedding n00b like me...

So when you get fitted you should wear a bra with the same amount of padding (or non padding) that you plan on wearing the day of, correct?

the "whatkatedid" should work great! That's what we're doing for my BM... as long as you pull it up all the way (gotta kinda shimmy to get in there lol) then it should stay.

as for the convertible bra... when you go and get fitted a shop like the link I gave you should have an assortmant of garments... you're likely to be larger than the size you think you are... (they always told my friend she was a DD but really she's a G... don't worry though once they fit her right she looked GREAT!)

you'll need to try each one on b/c different brands have different fits.

They should also have the shaper like on your link there.

I would also take a pic of your dress so that they can see the cleavage look you're going for.

    @amnystik: THIS!

I'm doing the same as you; ordering a gown from eBay (and am eagerly EAGERLY EAGERRRRRLY looking forward to getting it in, too!) and having my FSIL measure me.

I asked her what I need to wear for measurements, and she said whatever I'm wearing under the dress! LOL!  I love the lady.  She also asked for a picture of the dress and the list of what THEY want measurements on.

Oh, as for VS, the service really depends on where you go.  I've been to two different ones (okay, sorta three, but that one was prior to my son's birth and is during a time period my brain is desperatly trying to block) and one I got lousy service, the last one (went this past Friday), I had people falling over themselves to help me and my FI (they kept trying to get my FI to buy leopard print, except for the gay guy who suggested the style my FI bought and commended him on the color my FI chose! LOL!)

If you're going to a seamstress, don't forget to ask her if she'd be willing to do alterations if needed.  No need to burn bridges and all that!

Good luck!!!! and I love that gown!!!!

@ella86:Thank you! Yeah I just don't think cups will... separate ^^

@amnystik:Yeah the link I found is the only one that will seem to work Exceeeeept its got those clips that I can't wear it with the dress and without the clips I fear it will ride up as many before it has. (I wore a tummy slimming pencil skirt type slip under a bm dress and the WHOLE night it just kept rolling up and would rest right above my butt... I just ended up taking it off

@Zinzerena:Yeah I'm scared but excited! Also, I don't think I can have her to the alterations because she's in St. Louis, my wedding is in Chicago and I'll be in Chicago a good two weeks before the wedding right around when the last fitting will be... :( Boo.

They have a double sided fashion tape that you can use so that it doesn't move... They also have a spray "glue"

We saw both of these things at the fitting shop... lol

I think they think of just about everything. ;)
