Don’t worry, fillings aren’t that bad! The worst part for me was having to have my jaw propped open! With a good dentist, you shouldn’t feel much of anything!

I have really soft teeth and have a filling almost everytime I visit the dentist.  It’s not so bad.  They will give you a numbing shot, this pinches a lot but is over pretty quick.  The worst part is the drilling, the noise and the feeling of your head being drilled.  But it will be over before you know it.  Bring your iPod and sunglasses!  It helps me relax adn just kind of zone out until it’s over.

@MsGinkgo:  you’ll be totally fine! I think I have a filling in all of my back teeth (I have soft, grooved teeth…so basically cavity heaven despite my frequent brushing). The unpleasent part is really the sound of the drill. They numb you up so it doesn’t hurt. It’s very routine!

@MsGinkgo:  Are they invasive or just surface cavities?  I have had two surface cavities filled and other than the drill being noisy and the stinkiness, it isn’t that bad.  The sooner you have them filled, the less invasive the filling procedure is.

It’s really not bad at all.  They numb you enough and if you need more novacaine, just let them know and they’re usually happy to oblige.  It just feels like someone is pushing down on your tooth fighting against your jaw, so only a little muscle pressure.

@lucygirl1:  I have the same problem with soft teeth. I feel like every time I go to the dentist they tell me to come back for a filling. I was shocked the last two times I went, because I didn’t need a filling!

@MsGinkgo:   Crap.  Didn’t mean to scare you more.  It’s REALLY not bad.  I promise.

@MsGinkgo:  It’s not that bad. It is just awkward for them to try to get to the cavity sometimes. They are relly good about numbing you if it is needed. Hopefully they have TV on and you can concentrate on that. MY dentist has a TV hanging from the cieling so I always go in the morning and request the Today Show. Good luck.

If you have a good dentist , it shouldn’t be so bad . I had a dentist in my home town who rarely used numbing and I would barely feel anything. I wish he were still my dentist bc he made it so easy, and I wasn’t frozen for hours after. since I moved I’ve had fillings with numbing and the worst part is the sounds and feeling  numb after. It’Ll be okay. I find when I’m anxious about them, it’s way worse, so I just try to relax.

@MsGinkgo:  Oh wow! I’m sure you’ll be just fine. I don’t have advice since I’ve never had a cavity or a filling done. But I don’t think it can be worse than having your mouth held open by a plastic mold for an hour when you get braces on 🙂

Bring some music with you. I did that when I got braces and they were cool with that.

Edit – although if you are getting numbed up, I suggest having somebody drive you home after, or call a taxi. My dad always feels funny from the lidocaine and he fainted once. Just FYI.

@MsGinkgo:  It will be totally fine!  My only advice is that if you feel any discomfort, SPEAK UP.  I was too polite before and could feel a bit of it.  Not horrible or anything, just not nice.

Good luck 🙂
