(Closed) Getting Ready to propose… What about Blue Nile?

I’ve read lots of happy reports from people who bought rings from Blue Nile –  however, with them you don’t see an actual photo of what you’re buying, jsut a rendering, and there are better places to buy diamonds online.

I suggest you check out pricescope.com, it is full of diamond info and friendly people who can help you with your search.  Whiteflash.com is referenced all the time on PS, and they would probably be a better choice than BN, simply for their excellent customer service and being able to see actual photos before you buy.

Be sure to educate yourself a bit before you buy a diamond, there is so much to learn and so many vendors will rip you off if they get the chance.

Good Luck! Come back and show us what you choose!

My fiancee pretty much became a diamond expert doing research and although you can get some good deals online, an important rule of thumb was "you need to see the diamond" before you buy it.  Don’t be afraid to go to a variety of stores with your price range and negotiate.  That is what he did and ended up getting my beautiful ring for what he wanted.

On the other hand I have a coworker whose husband bought her ring on blue nile and it is beautiful.  I tend to agree with my FI though, he was able to really see the difference between the color, cut and all the inclusions, etc. In the end I think your FI will be happy with what ever you get but that is just my opinion.

Two coworkers of mine purchased their rings on BlueNile.  They were both, including their now FIs, very happy with the rings.  The rings were appraised at a much higher price than what they purchased the ring at. 🙂

My FI purchased my ring at bluenile after about a of year research.  You should see the book he read about diamonds.  He looked alot of local jewelry shops and the quality of the diamond he got over a brick and mortars store for the price did not compare.  With blue nile you get the specs of the diamond while it is being made and you have a period of time to return it if you are not satisfied.  My appraisal was more than the cost also and getting a reappraisal confirms it is the right choice.  My friends have been extremely impressed by his choice and the quality.

My FI looked everywhere for my ring, but he ultimately got the best deal at a local store, where they gave him more than 50% off because he paid cash (more than 1.5 years ago).  With the economy the way it is, I suggest you exhaust your search locally first, because there is nothing like looking at the diamonds under a jewlers loop that will sell you on the beauty of it.

 Good Luck!

My FI bought my engagement ring from Blue Nile.  He did a lot of research and looked at local stores. However he couldn’t find the quality that he was looking for.  On Blue Nile, he found the perfect ring.  It is appraised at a much higher value than the purchase price.  I needed to have the ring resized, and we had no trouble sending it back to have that done.  I would recommend them to anyone.

My FI got my ring from Blue Nile. He was really happy with the selection and service. He ordered it and it arrived the next day (as promised) in a unmarked-insured package. My ring is gorgeous. It is a nearly perfect diamond (D color, IF, very good cut) that he couldn’t find at any of the local stores without signing away our future. The ring is appriaised for $8,500 and he spend just over $5,300.

Yes, you don’t see exactly what you are getting, but they do show you a replica of what it is. If you do your research and know what you want, it is a good option. My FI and I went to a lot of stores before he made his mind up. The ring is exactly (if not better because the diamond is so sparkley!!!) what he wanted.

One thing to note… you have to take out your own insurance policy for the ring. He got it through the company that Blue Nile recommended. That is a downside of it all… you don’t have a corporate store policy to stand behind if your ring is lost or damaged. With today’s economy, though… who knows if the stores will even be around in 25 years! (Our insurance is $85 a year.)

Both my engagement ring and wedding band (with diamonds on it) are from Blue Nile.  I am completely satisfied with both.  I picked them out myself.  Though I couldn’t see the actual ring, I trusted that the specs on the diamonds I picked out were correct and I was completely happy with the ring.  At the time my husband bought the engagement ring, we were in a really remote area, so buying online was the best option for us.  Blue Nile’s customer service was excellent.  I would recommend purchasing the ring there.

I think that if you know what you’re looking for a purchase online can be a good idea. I too have heard lots of good things about Blue Nile. My ring came from another online site my FI chose because they had some beautiful gemstone rings. He chose the site my jewelery source and had a good customer service experience and they had a no-fee return policy if the ring was returned with a little tag on it. So that’s something else to consider with an online retailer.

I know three people whose rings are from Blue Nile and they are all completely satisfied.  I like that you can modify the search parameters on BN.  I would not have any qualms about getting the ring there.

My hubby bought my ring at Blue Nile. He actually bought me a promise ring from there, too, before my engagement ring. Both rings were absolutely gorgeous! And after we had picked out my engagement ring together, he called Blue Nile and their customer service guy helped him get me a bigger diamond for the same price as the smaller one we had originally wanted. All the jewelry hubby has purchased for me has been from Blue Nile and it’s always absolutely beautiful.

My FI got my ring on Blue Nile and I love it – I get so many compliments and I just love it.  It has been appraised for more than he paid for it so I think that’s definitely a good sign…

I got mine from Blue Nile too, and FI also purchased the wedding band from there. They don’t have the style that I wanted, but FI asked if they can custom-made it. It was gorgeous, pic in bio if u need. Price is very reasonable plus there’s no tax. Also, customer service is excellent. Ring appraisal too, we get it higher than it actual costs. We’d love to purchase FI’s wedding band from there too.
