@Jilliebean1:  I am so sorry to see your update.  I have done quite a few doses of misoprostol and they have all been different.  Seems like there is a very wide range of reactions.  The time that it worked most efficiently I have heavy bleeding and bad cramps for a couple of hours but pretty manageable.  It started a couple of hours after I inserted the first dose.  Take it easy today and stay close to a bathroom and heat pack.  I was really scared of it and it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.  I also ran a slight fever with it which is very normal. Good luck today,  hopefully it works quickly and fully for you.  I’ll be thinking about you today.

Sorry to hear you are going through this. Don’t be scared, I took misoprostol at 9.5w (fetus measuring only 7.5w which is why I was allowed). I had to take two doses because the first dose didn’t clear everything out.

I tend to have light periods, so the misoprostol to me seemed like a LOT of bleeding. I woke up at 2 a.m. one morning, and it was gushing out. I had my husband take me to the ER, where they monitored me but ultimately everything was fine. But the bleeding was so heavy that if I stood up and wasn’t wearing a pad, it would run down my legs.

After the second dose, I had a better idea of the heaviness of bleeding to expect. One night, I was soaking a Super size pad about once per hour (I was out to dinner with friends so that was awkward). I passed some large clots too, the largest few the size of golf balls. That was on the heaviest night, and then after that it was maybe 3-4 days of regular period level bleeding.

The cramping/pain wasn’t any worse than a normal period, it was just a lot more blood than I’d ever experienced. Be prepared for that, and try not to be scared if it happens.

Best of luck to you–I hope it works and you heal quickly and get your sticky baby soon. FWIW, the first cycle I was allowed to TTC after taking misoprostol, I got pregnant and am now at 15w and everything seems fine (knock on wood).

I had a couple rounds of it and it did nothing for me… My body decided to do everything on its own. Fast foward almost one year later and I’m 41 weeks pregnant about to give birth any day now. I’m sorry your going through this, but there is hope…

I’m so sorry you’re having to go through this.  I had to take 2 doses back in Feb, my body didn’t completely dispel everything the first time, so I did a 2nd round a few days later.  My OB gave me vicodin for the pain, but also advised I may need motrin as well, which I did.  I don’t know what the cramping would have been like without the vicodin, but with it, I felt just very strong menstrual cramps.  Like others have said, stay close to a bathroom.  I didn’t start to bleed until almost 7hrs after inserting the tablets, but I had heavy bleeding and passed very large clots for several hours.  I would also recommend that you sit on a towel or an old blanket too in case you soak through a pad/clothes.  also, make sure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

@Jilliebean1:  I am sorry you are going through this. I recently had to take misoprostol. I was measuring similar to you, but I was at 9.6 weeks measuring 6.1. I hope that they gave you a painkiller to take in conjunciton with it. Everyone’s experience is a little different, but I will share mine with you. I started the misoprostol on a Saturday and had to take two pills every four hours. I started bleeding and cramping about 3 hours after the first dose. I bled heavily and cramped all weekend. Hydrocodone and a heating pad were my lifesavers. You definitely want to make sure you have a heating pad on hand. I ended up having to take one more dose on Tuesday. In the end, I bled and had very painful cramps for a total of 8 days and bled for a total of about 13. I didn’t pass the sac until the 7th or 8th day, but had heavy bleeding and clotting until then. It took another 4 weeks for my hcg to go back down to 0. It is a very painful experience and can be very drawn out for some people. I hope that yours passes very quickly. Honestly it was the hardest thing I have ever done and was so painful that I couldn’t even process the emotional pain until the physical passed. If you need any support during this time please feel free to PM me. You are in my thoughts and prayers right now.

When I took it, I had moderate cramps (like a period, really) and slightly heavier than a period bleeding. I was pretty out of it, too, which was nice – slept through a lot of the first day.

The doctor said everyone has different experiences, though – some women feel hardly anything, some have bad cramps and really heavy bleeding. Just follow your doctor’s guidelines about keeping an eye on the bleeding/flow, so you know if you are bleeding too much!

To follow up on other posters, I did not have any kind of painkiller–my doctor didn’t offer one, and I think she might have mentioned I could take something OTC if I wanted, but I didn’t. The pain wasn’t the issue so much as the sheer volume of blood. Just my perspective.

@Jilliebean1:  Take all of the pain meds first.  I’m sorry but it’s hurts like an MFer.  I lived in my bathtub for a few hours because it was the only thing that helped with the pain of the contractions.
