I have seen a few different pet appreciation threads come up recently, and I felt like our giant breeds were left out! So lets see your Newfs, Pyrs, Mastiffs, and other big boys and girls!
Here is my 3 1/2 year old Newfoundland dog Charlie!:
At 8 weeks old, when he first came home:

And now (in our December e-pics):

On his favourite perch, our front steps, at home:

OMG I don't have a large breed (dachshund) but I love them and can't wait till I have the space for one. I'll be watching this thread for some big breed goodness!
ADORABLE!!!!
I have a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix. His name's Bubba and he's 130+ pounds. His favorite activites are eating and sleeping. Go figure. ;)
He's gorgeous! We have a shrimp of a shepherd/lab mix coming in at 47 pounds. We'd love a great dane mix. I had a st bernard growing up, but DH can't get over the drool and hair.
@Ms Mini: SOOO cute, especially that last pic.
I, like jjilyeah, would love a big breed but no room :( So for now, I'll have to stick w/ my 2 ankle bitters ;)
How cute! I love big dogs!
Below is me and my goldendoodle, Abel. He is such a cutie!
I have an all black german shepherd, her name is Zoe, she is 6 years old and in perfect health at 110 pounds! Sorry blurry cell phone photo.
@Bride_Colleen: My neighbor's dog is a Labradoodle, but he looks very similar to your Goldendoodle. Is Abel also hypoallergenic like my neighbor's dog?
@CaraMia10: I actually think many giant breeds would be fine in a smaller space if they were walked daily. I am completely serious when I say that my newf spends probably 18 hours a day in our ensuite ... it is small, but the coolest room in the house, he sleeps there all the time.
@mrstilly: Thanks! The drool and hair is a bit to get used to ... hairy drooly dogs are not for everyone, but I now feel like I would never have a different breed of dog!
@Ms Mini: our neighbors have one that look just like yours! When they walk down the street from a distance it looks a like a bear coming towards you! Love it! We call him, Bear, even though we know his real name.
I would be more likely to get a "giant breed" if 1) shedding and drooling was non existent and 2) I wasn't allergic. As it is, I got the biggest I could... a Standard Poodle :-)

My baby Dane mix at 8 weeks (waiting to get adopted)

When she was 12-14 weeks and home!
Taking care of me when I was sick and she is about 7 months here

yippie-kay-ay for showing big dogs some lovin'!
Here's our Alaskan Malamute, Cooper, about a month after we brought him home
(12 weeks):

and here is he a month later ...45 pounds and couting :]

Too big to sit on my lap now! :[ He should be about 120 pounds. Our pride & joy! :]
@Coleerenee: They are never too big to sit on your lap! Charlie my newf is 140-ish pounds and still sits on me if I will sit on the floor, he likes to sit down then lean back against my chest, because I sat him that way all the time when he was a puppy!
Abbey (The dane mix above) isn't much of a lap sitter, her rott-pitt sister Izzy is though! But instead of sitting on my lap Abbey insists on sitting on top of Izzy!
This is our Bullmastiff Seamus. we rescued him. 140lbs of Love!
Squeeeeee, I love big dogs!! Ours is midgetous (only 7 lbs right now, probably going to be about 15) but I love seeing the biggies out for walks and playing...
I love my newfie! I've been lurking for a few weeks, but I registered just to share pictures of mine.
We live in Texas, so he spend 23 hours a day inside, but he's happy because he's near us. When he goes out, he loves going swimming in the pond.
@cr8ingwaves: Your mastiff is sooo cute!
@MissIntent: My newf is inside 99% of the time as well ... close to AC vents! He hates the heat so much!
@Mrs. DG: Do Berners swim very well? Charlie would swim until he collapsed (when we take him out we have to stop him to make sure he doesn't get exhausted)
He sheds only a teeny bit. They can be a lot more curly though and not shed at all.
My Romo Bear & Chomper (Romo is the bigger one, He passed away :()
I'm so jealous. I always loved big dogs and hope to have one someday, but we got a beagle because he was the perfect size for our apartment at the time.
I don't think I could love another dog more than I love my little beagleface, though.

@Mrs. DG: what kind of dog is that? My BF is obsessed and we asked someone but I forgot the breed. Thanks!
@jjilyeah Bernese Mountain Dog would be my guess.
I grew up with a St. Bernard and two Great Pyrs. I LOVE big dogs. I cannot wait to have a yard so that we can add a dog to our family.
Here is our family's Great Pyr Romeo. He was around 135 lbs at his peak but he's now 12 years old and maybe around 120lbs... of total love.
Catch is a Bernese Mountain Dog. They have webbed feet and so can be good swimmers. However, Catch often has more motivation than sense, so has been known to end up with a Mommy rescue! (Usually when he's busy thinking about the other dog near him or the ball he's about to go get).
Our house has lots of stone and tile floor for him to choose from, though his favorite room to lay in is the bathroom - which is odd, there's no air circulation in there! (house is a bit eccentric).
His favorite thing is to go outside and swim in the pond though. There is 6 ducks living in it, and he will swim for 15 minutes without pause, trying to catch one of them. Luckily, they are faster than him while in the water.
This is my Rusty. Unfortunately, we had to put him down this spring but he was my big boy. Not giant, giant but a respectable 110 lbs at his heaviest, though he was a bit healthier at a trim 95. Most of the time I would forget how big he was until most people practically fell over when I saw him. Then I would remind myself that he made our 65 lb pit look tiny so there must be something to it. Oh, best guess was that he was a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Lab mix.

If only I had the pic of him with his paws on my friend's shoulders with me... He was as tall as she is! :-)
Our Goldendoodle, Marley. She thinks she's a small dog and loves to snuggle.
@Mrs. DG: Can you post one of Catch's baby pictures? I saw you post one, a long time ago, and it was maybe the cutest picture ever!
I really, really want a Great Dane, I love those gentle giants! Right now we have a 65 lb American bulldog mix, hardly a large dog, and a 13 lb kitty who thinks he is part huge dog and part ninja, I seriously doubt he thinks he's a cat at all, lol. I love the pet posts!
Happy to oblige DDW! (Always happy to show off our firstborn!) This was when he was about 5 weeks old :)

Ah! I LOVE big dogs! I really, really want a Bernese Mountain Dog, that or a Husky (my HS mascot, btw.)
Here's my baby girl. She's not giant, but a very respectable 85lbs. She's a Belgian Shepherd/collie mix.
With our beagle.
@Ms Mini- He is gorgeous!!
@HereComesTheSun - aren't they the best dogs!!! Mine is 1.5 years old and his name is Triscuit. How does Romeo handle the heat in Houston??
1st pic is him as a puppy, the middle two are of him getting caught being bad and the last one is the most recent pic of him.. with his blanky.
awww!! I looooove giant dogs!! Like seriously love. My family had a newfoundland for awhile but my mom recently had to move and couldn't find a place that she could afford that allowed dogs so she had to rehome her :( She's about 6 years old and was nothing but love. One time, we were letting her inside. She was walking from the back yard to the side door along the drive way and some kids were walking down the sidewalk and they got very scared and said "is that a bear?!?" we had a good laugh. She wouldn't hurt a fly :) And for a newf, she wasn't very drooly! Just a sloppy water drinker. Her shedding was nuts though. But I agree, that Newfs at least could be kept in apartments or small spaces as long as you took them out for a walk or swim every day. They're couch potatoes lol
@Allyser: Yes, we love him.
He actually lives with my parents in El Paso- still hot but not humid. We have a tiny apartment that he will not fit in. He has his shady spots in the yard, sometimes digs holes (ug!) and has an insulated giant igloo doghouse. And of course, he's inside a whole lot! He's just a lovey, sweet dog.
I love how he heards our family together!
