This only happened to me with my sister, so I called her and thanked her, and let her know that her gift was on backorder. I'll send her a thank you note when I receive the gift. Apparently, Macy's tells you they're on backorder, but not the person who sent the gift. I'd verbally thank her now and promise to let her know when you receive the gift, and then send a note when you actually get it.
I'm sending the thank you card with a note saying that it is on back order, but we can't wait for it to arrive. This has happened to us twice so far, and we expect it to happen a few more times.
Oh thank you so much! I really didn't want to not acknowledge it but I wasn't sure how best to handle it!
Thanks so much :)

Hi Hive
I am getting married in three weeks, my MOH mother has very kindly bought us one of our silver place settings. Macys have sent me an email telling me who bought it but that it is on back order ( It won't be in stock until three weeks after my wedding). How do I deal with thanking her for the gift? Is it rude to acknowledge it before I physically receive it? Or should I send a note of thanks anyway?
Many thanks!
