From what I've always been told, buy clothes for the kid to grow into, buy diapers and buy momma a little something too :D Do you know if the baby is regular weight or is he/she a little chunkier?
I've had lots of friends have babies recently, and made blankets for 2, bought another 3 handmade stuffed animals from etsy, and am painting a little wooden train set for another 2. I think the stuffed animals came off the best so far, although the trains aren't done yet. :)
ETA - the animals were from here and here. Both were great to work with.
Of course toys are always fun--especially fun learning ones to engage the kiddo. While the wooden train set sounds really cute, be careful about paint. Kids like to stick anything in their mouths and you don't want paint flaking off or them sucking it off and making them sick.
About the diapers, no it's not awesome, but mom's always say they could use diapers and no one ever gifts them to them because it's "not fun" so pair it with something fun! I would buy them at the same store she might have in the area where she lives in case 1) they are too small/big 2) not the brand she prefers.
I'd say toys that he can learn with (like the roll and crawl ball). He's at an age that crawling and developing solid motor skills are next on the milestone list. I think you can get it at walmart for a pretty good price! Oh and they also have Scout my talking dog which is probably the coolest baby toy, you personalize it on the computer and it sings songs about the kids name and their fav food etc. Shopping for babies is so much fun!
I always resort to either educational toys or books for young kids. There are many out there that will stimulate the child.
As Curlysue had mentioned, clothes for the next sizes up are also very useful just make sure the size you get is appropriate for the season. For instance you don't really want to buy heavy, thick or long-sleeved clothing in the 9 month size as it will be summer time when the baby should hit that size.
Things like Onesies and Diapers will always be useful too.

I'm going to visit my cousin who has a 6 month old and thought I'd ask you ladies who have been researching all things babies if there are any unique gifts she might not already have. Could be for an older baby so they'll grow into it.
