The Dangerous Book For Boys: Things to Do: http://www.amazon.com/Pocket-Dangerous-Book-Boys-Things/dp/0061656828/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1246605593&sr=8-3
This is what I'm getting for my ring bearer (he's 7) but I think this applies as a good gift for all boys and men.
I always give my little cousins gift cards to video game stores. They all have PSP's or Nintendo DS's now, so it works well. I've also gifted "cool" DVDs.
I was going to suggest a video game gift certificate, too. Or even just one to Target with a note saying "I know you like _____, I hope this will help you get more!" I'd put at least $20 on it, given that most games these days are $60.
Generally when I give a giftcard to my neices or nephews, I usually do $25.
Or sometimes I'll do a movie basket. Give them a $10 gift card to the video store, some microwavable popcorn, movie candy, and then whatever movie is popular for their age at the time.
Video games/gift cards are a great idea, but they won't work for our situation. Gift cards are looked down upon by some in the family (equivalent to offering cash), and his family is from another country where kids don't spend as much time with video games (though they love to do it when they get the chance!).
Keep the ideas coming! (The Dangerous Book for Boys does look like it could be a winner.)
Hmmm...does he have a favorite sports team? Maybe you can give him a jersy.

My fiance's nephew and two nieces are going to participate in the wedding. As a thank-you, but moreso as a momento of taking part in our special day, I'd like to offer each of them a gift.
The girls are easy: 5 year-old will get a Bridal Barbie because she loves the part about dressing up like a princess, and 10 year-old will get a personalized necklace.
Now ... what would make a good gift for a 12 year-old boy???
