my DH is defending his dissertation this friday! i have planned celebratory parties, got a card, a cake, but no gift yet…..but i am not sure what to get.
his friends in his lab have offered to pitch in for something. so something non-romantic is the route i am looking for.

Is there anything associated with his work or line of study that would be appropriate?
Does he have an IPad? Does he need a new laptop or netbook? Any other electronics? Will his work involve travel? Does he need a GPS?
Does he have a hobby or interest?

ah, well there goes my first thought 😉
what about something in his field – doesnt have to be current equipment/book that he can use now but something vintage to show where his field has come from

How about a nice bookshelf to put all his textbooks on

i don’t have any good ideas- but I just wanted to say, how exciting!!! XD

@julies1949: ipad would be a great idea and i thought of it myself before checking back here, but i can’t afford it now. i just asked him how much they cost!
in general he is very into electronics, but its really hard to get him stuff because its hard to know exactly what he wants or will use! ugh.
@eloping:his field is clincal neuropsychology. so anything psychology related could be cool……but what?! i think i just need to go shopping and i will get some ideas perhaps, that usually works.
@TheLionQueen: thanks! and i agree!

Does he have a model of the brain to use with his clients? His colleagues could help pick one that was appropriate.
Does he have a membership in the American Psychological Association? check with his colleagues to see of that is the appropriate organization.
A dopamine molecule key chain?
or serotonin necklace

What about a phrenology head statue?

I got my newly minted doctor boyfriend a weekend away in Tasmania – and he proposed to me on the trip!! Would his coworkers be willing to put in for a nice dinner out, or a night away at a sweet B & B for you guys? Or were you sure you wanted a “thing” type gift? If so, how about a bottle of really nice booze? Or a beautiful globe for his office?

@julies1949: hmm, i like that brain model idea! i am not sure how “useful” it would be, but it might something cute to put on his desk, thanks!
@ScarletBegonia: a getaway is a great idea! again, i need to save up for it (which means getting a part time job). He is supporting us financially now, so i don’t want to plan a trip and say “but you have to pay for it, LOL”. I could tell him a weekend getaway is in the works though as part of his present. i think i will do that for sure actually. And i like the booze idea! that is something he will definitely enjoy and i can ask his lab members to pitch in for a big bottle of rum or something, thanks! that, plus the brain model can be given this friday (along with the cute cake i ordered to serve after dinner on friday when we go out with our families), will be good for now. and when i can plan and pay for a weekend away, we will do that!
thanks everyone 🙂

Instead of an iPad, what about an Android tablet? I got my husband the Samsung Galaxy Tab for a wedding gift, and it was a few hundred dollars less than an iPad. If your husband has a droid phone, he would probably actually be more comfortable with something like the Tab than an iPad.
Another option for something techy would be a Kindle or Nook. After all, he is going to have much more time for pleasure reading now!
