I meant to post this in Babies, don't know how it ended up in Beehive. Could a mod please move for me? Thanks!
@meliss: I am thinking clothes too! toys might be too bulky.. if they are one you could just get them some cute rompers! Try baby gap.. I love getting my little girl stuff from there.. always so cute, affordable and fashionable
What about a blanket with their name? My sister was just given one for her new baby, and it is adorable. Lillian Vernon has a lot of kids' products you can personalize: http://www.lillianvernon.com/
You can never go wrong with clothes.
My nieces LOVE both these toys and we used the poppin pals at the daycare I used to teach at. They are also on the best sellers list at toysrus for that age group.
Playskool Busy Poppin pals...its like a puzzle. You have to figure out how to make each character pop up.

This one is called Flow N Fill Spout. Bath toys are great because you can play with them over and over many different ways.

What about a book? You could pick a meaningful classic kid's book and write a message in the inside cover. Some options include books like The Little Engine that Could; Peter Rabbit; or Goodnight Moon
Hmm, I'm drawing a blank on others but there are tons of kids books out there that are classics and kids that age love being read to!
Just realized, not sure what country you're going to and not sure if the kids speak English - if not, sorry, maybe not the best idea! :-)
@Ree723: I love books by Sandra Boynton. I think one of my favorite's is Moo, Baa, Laa Laa Laa. It's a board book and very appropriate for one year olds. It might not be a "classic" but it should be! Like pp have said, a cute outfit paired with a book would be a very nice gift IMO.
If you do get a book, but sure to write in the front so that years from now they will remember who gave it to them. I do think that a book you loved as a child is a wonderfully meaningful gift.
I also like the blanket idea. I heard someone say once that for young children you can never have enough blankets/towels/clothes because everything gets dirty so quickly. I would find clothes scary too, you have no idea what size they might be!
Bath toys. My kids love bath toys more than anything in the world!
This is one of their favorites:

@mistyeyes: I second the flow and fill spout! We have that one too, they LOVE it!
If you have a Build A Bear near you, that would be a great idea! They have a cute bunny for $10 and then for $5 you can put a voice recorder in it with your voice talking to them! Any saying you would like, something that as they get older they can remember you by and they will always know where that bunny came from! Good luck!
Book - Pinkalicious
Stuffed animal - Jellycats brand are the SOFTEST things you'll ever touch
Tutu - There are all sorts of people selling them and they can dress up and play!
These are great ideas, please keep them coming! I'll look into all of them and see which ones I can find this weekend. I'm flying out next week.
@Ree723:, @Tickles: , @mrstj2b: The kids do not speak English so I would have to get a pictures only book.
Books or something personalized that can be a keepsake- but I always, always go with books!
Not necessarily! Ask their mums about one of their favourite books and get the English version. My uncle's family did this for their child and she learnt some German that way because she would know the words (eventually, once old enough) from the book in English and then learn the German.
But I second the tutu idea! That's brilliant. :D
I just made a no-sew blanket, hat, and scarf for my friend's baby shower, it was a little time consuming, but she loved it & it's more special since I made it.
In my family, when we were that young, we were given savings bonds instead of a tangible gift. It worked out fantastically, because we were so young, its not like we knew the difference, and now, twenty some years later, FI and I are buying a house and we cashed in, between the two of us, over 10k in savings bonds that had matured over the years. I know this route isnt for everyone, but by buying savings bonds you are investing in the childs future. Plus, they pack flat ;)
Both Borders and Barnes and Nobles have foreign language shelves in the children's section. I've found some really cute books in different languages.

I'm travelling back to my home country next week to visit family and friends. Two of my best friends both had babies since I last saw them - both girls who just turned one. I want to get them gifts but I'm clueless about anything babies. I'm looking for something small and light that's easily packable and don't mind getting them both the same thing. First I thought of clothes and went to Babies r Us but I felt confused and petrified in there, couldn't pick anything :( Those of you who have kids or nieces, would love your suggestions! If there's a specific outfit/toy/book/shoe you know a little girl (or their mom) would love, please feel free to post a link.
