Can you do a small table (6ft or so) and put the box on the table? That way if people do bring gifts they have a table to put them on and the box is right there for the people that have cards.
i agree with pp. if you have guests that are invited that don't know about the tradition they may bring a gift.
I also agree, just put the box on a table that is a little bigger, in case people do bring gifts.
hmm.. we were going to have the gift card box by entrance next to the sign in while guests were arriving and then move it later - we didn't want the cash gifts sitting by the entrance throughout the whole night. i guess we could do the same w/ the gifts.
We had a 4x4 table with a card basket in the middle... people left their gifts on the same table... worked well for us :-)

here's a question for the hive:
we're not registered anywhere and are honoring chinese traditions and going the route of red packets instead. we've let our guests know that.
i'm planning on a gift card box for the red packets and cards. do we still need a gift corner / table for people who are bringing physical presents to us?
