The ceremony readers should be invited to the rehearsal dinner because they have a role in the ceremony and would logically be included in the rehearsal.  It’s kind of cold to request they come rehearse then leave them out of the rehearsal dinner.

As for gifts, I’m not sure if it’s entirely customary but I think it is  a very nice touch to thank them with a small gift, because after all they are doing you a favor and their favor makes your day more special.  We have one male and one female reader, and while we’ve not decided on their gifts yet, we’re thinking maybe a nice bottle of wine for each, or perhaps a fancy bath gift set for the female. No clue really yet on the male. To give perspective, I’m spending about $120  each on gifts for the bridesmaids and am looking in the $30 range for the readers.

I was a reader in a close friend’s wedding last year, and I was given my gift along with the bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, etc. at the rehearsal dinner.  The bride gave me a really cute body wash/lotion gift set from Philosophy, along with a card that expressed how much my friendship means to her.  I’m sure my gift was less expensive than the bridesmaids’ gifts (who received jewlery, I believe) – but that didn’t matter one bit.  Your friends shouldn’t care about, or even notice, that.
