So now that we’ve unwrapped most of the gifts, I noticed something funny – the few gifts we got from the older guests (who didn’t just send cash) are all of the heavy silver decorative persuasion – Giant silver serving dish, large leaf shaped bowl, pinapple dish and four napkin rings. Is it traditional? Lucky?
The younger guests mostly gave us kitchen items.
Anybody else notice this?

Hmm I didn’t have that happen with my older guests. We pretty much got what we wanted off the registry and gift cards except for a few stray gifts.

I think those were the kind of things they probably got for their weddings, back when registries were only for the fancy china and silver sets, so these are probably what seem like appropriate gifts for them. Also, many older guests come from a generation where entertaining (dinner parties and such) was much more formal, so wedding gifts were probably often intended to help set the couple up for doing this kind of entertaining. Hopefully you can still find a use for these items–I don’t know anyone (even in my parents’ generation) whose ever thrown a dinner party that formal.

This post reminds me of the Mad Men episode after Pete and Trudie get married and he has to go to the department store and return the ceramic Chip ‘N Dip. Random, I know, but those are the type of old-school gifts I can see getting from my older relatives if they don’t give cash-money.

@kittyachi I love Pete returning the chip-n-dip! I think of that everytime I look at our registry and see our own little chip-n-dip on there. Too funny.

haha yup. Well in older generations you had to worry about home intruders more so the silver gifts doubled as things you could hit people over the head with if need be.

we haven’t gotten gifts yet, but for some reason my grandma keeps giving us all sorts of her own things (she’s getting older and i think she’s just excited that i’m engaged and wants me to have a proper home and she doesn’t use the stuff anymore) and it’s mostly things that she got at her wedding. it’s all the fancy stuff that i have to put up on a high shelf so the dog wont get to it. my mom uses her fancy things, even if it’s not a fancy schmancy party.

@ snowflake – Perfect! now I know where to put the giant leaf bowl – next to the door so I can bash an intruder! Love it!
