I would just wait it out and register for the things you want rather than buying them now. For now, only buy yourself the essentials that you can't live with out. In the grand scheme of things waiting one more year won't be that long (especially because you'll be planning a wedding and time will fly!)
I would wait until after the wedding - you can get some great stuff as wedding gifts off your registry. P.S. - I have that same kitchenaid stand mixer! Got it from my registry :)
I agree with the others and say wait. Even if you don't get them as gifts, if you registered for them, you can get a discount for completing your registry after the wedding. So, you'll save yourself some mula.
We bought our house last fall and got married about 2 weeks ago. I lived with a lot of my old junk until now. This past weekend it was really nice to pull out everything (we even waited to use all the shower gifts etc until after the wedding). We have a grown up/married kitchen now.
I tried SOOO hard to hold off on buying anything unless I absoultely needed it. I didn't have muffin pans and now that I do I am SOO excited to use them. And cake pans!
I would wait. I lived in our new house for a few months without the wedding and used old college junk in the kitchen and stuff. As our gifts are coming in and we're getting settled, I'm packing up the old stuff to donate. We've gotten some really great stuff that I wouldn't have bought for myself price-wise, so it was definitely worth waiting for the better stuff as gifts.
I think if you can wait, do it. but if your old stuff really bothers you that much, and you don't expect too many people to be buying registry gifts then go ahead and just buy what you need for you home so your comfortable. We opted to wait and register and live with out old stuff. Alot of our friends, just purchased what they needed and wanted and then registered for less items later when the time came.
I think without waiting there's still lots of stuff you can register for like your china! since that is a large amount like 10 place settings and all its accessories that can take up a good chunk of a registry. Also if you don't bake often, hold out for that kitchen aid mixer. but small things like utensils, mixing bowls, everyday dishes, i'd consider getting if you really don't want to use your old stuff. Also you can never have enough bedding. so just because you bought a sheet or duvet set doesn't mean you can't register for another one.
Another vote here for "just wait". Even though there's stuff I'm lusting after (such as that stand mixer you posted!) I'm being patient for our wedding; I've gotten along through college and a couple years after with my current stuff I can manage one more year.
As far as what to register for, get knives! A good set of knives (like Wustof or Shun) can make the difference between cooking being a chore and being fun.
I say in general, wait...
But get the Margarita Machine now!!! :) After all, you will get an extra summer of use out of it! Consider it an engagement gift to yourselves! Seriously, that thing looks fun!
I think also, all of my friends realized that we weren't registering for the sake of registering, but we actually really needed a lot of stuff. It was nice because people knew we weren't being greedy etc.

So Mr. Kenway and I are moving into our first place together. Here is the catch...Our wedding is not until July 28, 2011. So we are just a little over the year marker...
We have bought a new couch, coffee table with a matching dining room set, a new bed and new chest. Bascially all the large pieces we were going to need we bought early. So the question now is when it comes time for us to actually register for gifts...should we just go for things like new versions of our pots and pans? BIGGER and BETTER towels? softer sheets? I mean I guess what I am trying to figure out is should I hold back on buying a lot of stuff for our new place because we can just wait until after the wedding?
(I have lived on my own for 7 years so i have a lot of starter junk but I don't like it all anymore, I have outgrew it)
We thought about the whole honeymoon registry approach and decided it wasn't really for us because we have to pay for everything so early it wouldn't make sense to be honest. (family friend is a travel agent lol)
I want some fun kitchen items and some nice stuff now...should I just deal with what we have and wait until after the wedding before I go house decorating crazy? Should I just keep it basic? Even though I want all this stuff?!!!!!
