So we have decided on names! We are planning on finding out the gender, but as I’m only 12 weeks along, we have decided on names for both genders. I’m sure we’ll use these names in the future if it’s the other gender too. BUT my husband doesn’t want to announce the names until after the childs’ birth, and I’m going crazy because I’d like opinions (and I also want to share!).
We’re going traditional / family names for the first boy and first girl we have. The boy name is all settled, for the girl we are thinking of either “Laine” or “Elaina” after his grandmother, Elaine. (We would use the nickname Lanee, which we both love). I’d really love to have the middle name be Andrea, after my mother. We don’t want to offend his mother though, who raised him after his father died at age 5, and would like to use her name for a middle name as well. (Her name is Mary, which we also like). We are trying to avoid hurt feelings and drama, also we would love to honor both of our mothers.
SOooo the question to you wonderful bees… Is “Elaina Andrea Mary R__” or “Laine Andrea Mary R___” Too much of a mouthful?
And, which name do you like better? Laine or Elaina? And do you think this still honors his grandmother Elaine? Or should we just use Elaine?
Is it bad I’m hoping we only have boys? haha (JUST KIDDING. I honestly don’t care about the gender, but our boys name is SO much easier!)

I like Elaina Andrea Mary R…. I love the unique spelling and that there is a family reason for it! Very special. Have you thought about Elaina Mary Andrea R…..I don’t think I saw it on the list, just curious if you already ruled it out. Congrats!

I like Elaina best. And Laney as a nickname is cute!
Question: What would you do if you had a second daughter for her middle name(s)? Would you rather save one mothers name in case of a second daughter, and if the second is a boy, maybe use the masculine form of their name? Like, Marc for Mary or Andrew for Andrea?

Love Elaina! I one day hope to have an Elena/Elaina/Alaina but can’t decide what version I like best.
I’m not a huge fan of double middle names, but if you go that route I think Mary first flows better. I agree with previous poster of leaving one for a second child (even if that means taking a masculine form for a boy).
Another option could be combining them in an alternate form. I know someone who did Lina + Ann = Leanne as a mn. Annemarie? Maryanne?
Congratulations btw!! 🙂

Also just read that Elaina is to honor his grandma. I don’t think it would be terrible to leave his mother’s name off this baby especially since you are already honoring someone from that side.
And I think that the variation on Elaine still honors his grandmother nicely.

I agree with RedWine13 about combining the names. What about Maralyn or something which combines Mary and Elaine. You would still get to use your favorite nickname too. So Maraline Andrea R….

I love the name Elaina Andrea! It’s really pretty and I like that the spelling of the usual “Elena” is a little different! Those are actually names of two of my very close friends growing up and they were two of the sweetest and smartest girls I knew 🙂

Given that you almost never use even one middle name, let alone two, don’t stress. It really does not matter in the whole scheme of things. No one’s life was ever affected because they only had one instead of two middle names. Nor has it ever mattered that much what anyone’s second name is. It is something that only the parents care about.
I would just name the baby with 2 middle names. No one is left out, you’re covered in case you never have another girl and it frees you up for another middle of your chosing if you do have a second.

It wont let me edit my post but another merging of the names could br Marlena.

I actually prefer Laine (pronounced “Lane”) Andrea, mostly because I’m not a fan of two middle-names. I don’t think it’s necessary to incorporate the names of all the special ladies in your life, just to make things fair. You can always name a future child after his mother. In the end, I’d probably appreciate the simplicity of a straight-forward name over the sentiment of as many names incorporated as possible.

I just like the flow of Elaina Andrea R___.

As other PPs have said, combining the names could honor both sides. Here are some options:
Mary + Elaine= Mariel (I knew a beautiful little girl with this name)
Mary+ Andrea= Marianne, Marion
Andrea+ Mary= Anne Marie
Elaine+ Andrea= Elana?
I actually really like the name Elana for the baby. It has the same meaning as Elaine as well. If you go for two middle names, Elana might work well as a first name:
Elana Andrea Mary R—-.
I think Elaine Marianne repeats the “aine” and doesn’t flow as nicely, as say, Elana Marianne.
Hope that helps. Baby names are so hard! Your name choices are all beautiful though!
