Good luck, I hope everything goes well! Since I'm still a student all of my jobs have had pre-determined endings, and thus I've not had to quit one yet.
Thanks. I'm super excited for the new job! I already personally know my new boss... and she is amazing!
Just cringing over surviving the end of this other job. I would almost give no notice (since my old boss would give a bad reference just to be mean) but my current apartment is subsidized by work, and I'm afraid to burn bridges.
@MissShork: Good luck at your new job and with giving notice. I'm going through this with my boss now and it is not fun.
I had to leave a job for this exact reason. Now, my boss lived in a different city that me, but it was still tough, as he had no problem picking up the phone and yelling.
I sent an email with a word attachment at 4:30 pm on a Friday afternoon:
Dear (boss),
Please accept this as notification of my termination of employment with (company). While I have enjoyed my time at (company) I have been offered a job that is more directly in line with my long term career goals.
Thank you,
employee
CC: HR
I was nervous as can be, but it had been pretty bad for a while. The boss reduced me to tears multiple times through the week. I think he read between the lines, as the only time he mentioned it was to say "I wish we could have talked before you accepted the new position".
That was the end of it.
There is no reason to tell them why you are really leaving (nothing good will come of telling them it's their fault). Stick to a "more in line with career goals" approach (or whatever) and think: only two weeks left!
@anotherbee: Thanks. I appreciate hearing someone who's been in a similar situation. I think your right to keep my reasons to myself as much as possible. Its hard to tell them how much they have made my life a living hell... but I'd rather leave quietly.
@anotherbee: sounds like my boss. In a different city than I and does not hesitate to pick up the phone and verbally assault me every chance she gets. I am reaching my breaking point fast with her...
@basketballwifetobe: you should quit too! ... my whole organization has a whole yelling mentality. It really started effecting my personal life (depressed, no libido, etc) and I realized that life is too short to be so unhappy.
I hate the verbal assults from bosses!! My very first job out of college I had a terrible boss, hovered, yelled, told me every day a new better way to do the work he assigned me the day before. I took a weeks vacation got another job, and resigned via fax. It was a terrible horrible way to handle the situation but he reduced me to tears at least 3 times a week. I was young and now I wouldn't let it get that bad.
But on the brightside, I have had some really good bosses after that one, I'm not sure if he was so terrible, they all look wonderful after!
unfortunately, I stuck it out too long....I was miserable. I dreaed going to work, readed the phone ringing, or seeing an email from him.
I think it;s "polite" to give two weeks, but I don't think its a legal requirement....
@MissShork: As soon as I have another job lined up, I am outta here! lol

So I'm giving notice after lunch at work today. I have a new job lined, so i'm giving my two weeks notice.
But I'm so nervous. The reason I'm quitting the job is because my bosses are complete B####s and constantly verbally attack us employees on a personal level. So I know my boss is gonna try to degrade me over this too.
What have your experiences when quitting a job? Usually, I'm nervious becaused I've loved my jobs and felt guilty for leaving.
