I'm finally ordering our wedding photos (I'm lazy) and I need to choose between glossy and regular. Our photog is in Vegas where we got married so I can't really request to see the difference in person.

    So which one?

I love glossies! I vote that!

I dunno though, matte always feels heavier/sturdier to me though... hmm. now i'm confused!

I'm a fan of matte. It just looks...better to me, haha - I don't know how to explain it!

I usually recommend my clients to get lustre (or matte, if lustre is not in your package) over glossy, they all cost the same. Colors seem to pop a little more on glossy compared to matte, but they're very hard to keep your fingerprints away! If your photog offers a lustre option, it has the same color saturation as glossy without the glare or fingerprint.

Get whatever is ARCHIVAL. Typically, most glossy photo paper (at least this is definitely true for darkroom paper) is NOT archival because it's resin-coated (like plasticy stuff) in order to get it shiny. I think it's true for all glossy stuff, actually, in order to get the gloss. Anyway, the gloss degrades, and the photo deteriorates. Fiber-based/matte paper is usually archival. Also ask if it will be printed with archival ink.

It's a matter of if you want your photos to last 20 years or 200 years. :p

Good choice with matte, like 50 said, they almost always last longer and look better.

I prefer matte or lustre! Glossy is too... glossy! And the fingerprints, oh god!

I always think that Matte is more professional looking.

Matte lasts longer for one thing. That aside, I personally prefer the matte look.

I would vote matte. Glossy photos show fingerprints more, and reflect light, which makes it hard to see the picture.

    found this about the two:

    Glossy

    Pros:

    • Photos will have a shiny finish.
    • Colors are vibrant.
    • Images are crisp and sharp (assuming the original photo was in focus).
    • Glossy finish does not produce a textured look when scanned and converted to digital.

    Cons:

    • They are highly susceptible to fingerprints and smudges.
    • To remove fingerprints and smudges, you need to use a photo cloth and/or a liquid solution. Rubbing a photo, no matter how soft the cloth is, can produce scratches.
    • Glossy photos produce a glare, making them difficult to see from certain angles.

    Matte

    Pros:

    • Fingerprints and smudges are not as visible.
    • Since most professional prints are printed on matte-finish paper, photos printed on matte paper can have a more professional look. This is especially true with black and white photographs.
    • Glare is significantly reduced with matte-finish prints.

    Cons:

    • The texture of matte finish can make a photo look grainy.
    • Colors are usually less vibrant on a matte finish.
    • The texture of a matte-finish print may produce a pattern or visible texture when the photo is scanned or converted to digital.

Matte finish!    I'm a photographer and would NEVER recommend glossy photos.    They are so high maintenence - fingerprints kill them.    I don't even know whey labs offer the choice.
