I did an early one at 10 weeks (due to a high random glucose value), my drink just tasted like flat orange pop. I had hyperemesis, and was not well controlled at that time, and managed to keep it down with the meds I was on at the time (you can take anti-nausea meds), for the 3 hour test that was ordered. I did end up having to go lie down in the back room of the lab, because the nausea was getting so bad, and I was done 2 hours out of 3 at that point, so I really didn't want to have to do it again!
It tastes like super sweet orange flavored punch. It's not good by any means, but it's not completely disgusting. :)
Lol, it tastes like flat orange soda, to me. It's not that bad, just make sure to drink it cold.
Do you have to do this? Do they do this every where? Isn't it just a blood test?
with DD I did the "sprite" one and it was like sweet, flat soda (not in a yummy kind of way), but def. make sure it's cold, it was manageable :)
I have this same fear. I am the pickiest person in the world with food and drinks. I won't be surprised if I throw it up. It is that bad. I am dreading my 28 week appt for this reason and hope I pass it! The 3 hour test would send me over the edge. I may throw a tantrum.
@heathaah: I was afraid of this too, so much so that I asked my doctor. Seriously, I dreaded this test since before I ever got pregant. It really was not that bad, mine came in a small water bottle., and like others have said, it tastes like flat orange soda. It's unpleasant, but not gag-worthy, and I'm still throwing up at 29 weeks.
The best advice that I can give you (that I got from AvantLaLettre) is NOT to sip it. Take a deep breath, plant your feet and just get it done. You can't eat or drink after until they draw your blood, but the aftertaste doesn't linger too long, and hopefully you only have to do it the one time!
Bring a water and snacks for after the blood draw though :)
@Quietserenity: I second your suggestion of water and snacks, I scouted ahead of time and the lab I needed to go to was right beside a subway, so I went right after and got a veggie sub and drink!
It tastes like cheap orange pop. It seriously isn't a big deal! It's a small (8-10oz) plastic bottle of the liquid. You do have to drink it in 5 minutes though, so casually sipping it won't work. And while you're waiting the hour until the blood stick you can drink water.
It really wasn't that bad tasting... totally reminded me of really sweet drinks from childhood. Mine was nice and cold, so I could kind of pretend like it was just flat orange pop. But yes, as Quietserenity said, don't just sip it slowly. I tried that at first, thinking it'd be easier, but then I got yelled at for taking my time and I had to drink it quickly. It was better to just get it over with. It's really not that bad though. I wouldn't worry too much.
My 1-hour one was orange-flavored as well. To me, it tasted like melted orange popsicle. I think I had 5 minutes to drink it in and took nearly the whole time. It seemed easier to sip. And it was cold--wish it had been frozen! The 3-hour test was the fruit punch flavor. And sweeter. I think the orange was better. I also agree that you should bring water and savory snacks for afterwards. Oh, and you should be able to rinse your mouth out when you're done. And bring something to do during the wait so that you're distracted. Ok, I think that's all my advice. :)
It isn't that bad. Just very sweet... orangey flavored like those little "hugs" drinks. You definitely shouldn't throw up.
Quick tip! Eat eggs like scrambled a few hours before hand to pass the test. I did mine twice both were the orange and tasted like flat pop. I passed the first time but the doctor wanted me to test again later in my pregnancy, lol in fact I ended up giving birth before the results of tests came back the 2nd time
@Vegas Pug: I asked specifically at my lab if I could drink water and they said no. Different places have different rules, I guess!
I would still be prepared to not be able to, just in case.
I have my test tomorrow, but I've taken a similar test before with the same drink. It's not as bad as you think (only if you are still experiencing morning sickness). Just gulp it down!
I still get morning sickness at 27 weeks, so I was really worried about this. I ended up doing fine. I allowed myself to take the full 5 minutes to drink the sugar water, and I took a Zofran the night before. I got a little nauseous, but it was nothing that I couldn't manage.
I guess. I fasted for mine for 10 hours because my doc told me to and the lab said it wasn't necessary for the one hour. Once I drank the solution, the hour started and I was allowed to go sit in my car (listen to music, talk on the phone, whatever) and was told I could drink water. I just couldn't move around a lot or eat anything before the blood draw.
I had the same fear as you! I had the orange and to me, it tasted like those popsicles that come in the plastic sleeves, only melted. I actually didn't think it was bad at all.
@Sassygrn: Wait, I am confused....why would I want to "pass" the test if I really do have gestational diabetes? Wouldn't I want to know? Not that I want to inject myself with needles if I have it, but I'd rather treat it than hide it...right?
@heathaah: You don't want to have gestational diabetes and that is why you want to pass so that you don't have it.
Well of course I don't want to have gestational diabetes. But I either do or I don't already, right? So if I do (which I doubt) wouldn't I want to know so I could treat it properly?
@heathaah: She's saying you have to be REALLY careful what you eat beforehand,it's not like a cheat or anything.
I eat applesauce every morning for breakfast, but I couldn't eat it before my GD test, because it can artifically spike your results. I ate a peanut butter english muffin before mine.
Oh my gosh I am confused. I was told I had to fast for this test. I can't eat anything for 8 hours before it. Do all doctors do it differently?
@heathaah: Different doctors do the test differently, so you should follow your doctor's instructions.
Also, there's no way to really cheat the test. Many people fail the 1 hour test who don't actually have GD because the threshold is set low enough to fail anyone with even a slight chance of having GD. Some doctors recommend eating/avoiding certain foods because of the small chance you might get a false positive on the 1 hour test. But that's why anyone who fails the 1 hour test gets retested anyway, so they can catch the false positives and correctly diagnose the people who actually have GD.
@heathaah: Oops, sorry, I didn't realize you were instructed to fast! I was told NOT to fast (you fast before the 3 hour one at my Doctor's), but yes, you should absolutely do it the way your doctor ordered it.
It really was a much smaller deal than I anticipated it being, and I stress out more than anyone I know.
I had to do mine twice because I got behind an accident on the interstate and was outside of the time frame by the time I made it to the appointment. I also had hyperemesis well until the 7th month (ugh!).
Mine also tasted like flat, cheap, too sweet orange soda and I had to fast before hand. The first time I got it super cold and drank it. I'm not big on sugary sweet stuff so that part was a little rough because I couldn't really handle much sweetness with the hyperemesis to begin with. The second time, I left it at room tempature and just chugged the entire thing at once. That worked much better for me because I happened to not be nasueous when I drank it and it was overwith without me having to force down that sugary-ness.
All in all, it's not as bad as you think.
It tasted like flat orange soda. It wasn't great but it wasn't too bad either. Hold your nose and gulp it down! It's a small bottle, so it wasn't hard to get it all down at once. Then you only have to taste it once :P

Please tell me how the stuff you need to drink tastes. I am scared of gagging or throwing up if it is disgusting. My brother's girlfriend threw up and had to come back another time for her test. The second time they made her eat sweedish fish instead. I would just ask for that option, but the idea of eating sweedish fish with nothing to drink for 2 hours is scary in itself!
So how bad is it really? Thanks.
