I hadn't heard of the cooler idea, but I think it sounds good. Practical and something they'll enjoy.
My FI ended up ordering glass mugs and got the names of his groomsmen and our wedding date engraved on them. That wouldn't have been my pick, but they are his groomsmen.
What I wanted to do was get a nice wine stopper with the initial of their last names and a nice bottle of wine.
My fiance had personalized coasters made for his groomsmen that had their last names and sports related images on them... you could also use an online printing company (like shutterfly.com ) to create personalized photo gifts.
In another wedding he'd been in he received a flask with his initial engraved on it.
They are awesome. I've given then before as gifts, and they're always a hit.
We are giving them 4 pint glasses with their initials etched on (I'm doing this), along with a six pack of beer that reminds him of them. We are also considering some kind voucher for baseball tickets for the next season.
We are giving each of our guys an NFL jersey of their favorite team. We're into sports and FI is a huge football fan so it fits in. We found a discount site that is cheaper the more you order. I think it will be fun!
How about gift certs for greens fees at a local golf course? What guy doesn't love a day at the course?!
We're doing tuxedo tshirts and then some sort of flask or beer stein etc etc. It's up to FI and he hasn't thought that far ahead yet!
we were thinking flasks, but still a little unsure...they're harder to buy for then the BMs
I don't think you can ever go wrong if it involves music, sports, video games, or beer.

Mr. Tal and I were talking and I asked if he had any ideas for GM gifts that I could make and/or customize some way. He hasn't given this much thought yet, but I'm already making cuff links for all the guys. He told me to see if I could get any ideas from the Bees and online. So far the coolest idea I found was to give each GM a cooler filled with different types of beer. What about you fellow Bees, any unique gift ideas for GM? What are you planning on gifting your own GM?
