I need to go really badly! I didn't think my ring was that dirty either, until we tried on wedding bands last weekend. I tried on the matching wedding band to my e-ring and put my e-ring back on and was so embarrassed! I'm not sure where to go though, because I've heard too many horror stories of jewelry stores switching your stone while they "clean" your ring.
I usually clean mine at home once a week and I took to the jewelers about 5 months after we got engaged to be cleaned (got engaged in Feb 09). I'll probably try to take in every 6 months to be cleaned and to make sure everything is ok with it.
BridetoBee2010: Really?! I went to the store where my ring was bought. It should only take about 2 to 3 minutes for them to clean your ring. I don't think they can switch the diamond that quickly.
I got some cleaning solution (by Hagerty...it's good stuff) with my ring and clean it anytime I figure I'm going to be showing it off ;) So, I clean it approximately once a month, sometimes less. It always shocks me the amount of random grossness that collects on my ring. But then again, I work with kids so what should I expect.....
I get mine cleaned every 6 months by the jewler so it doesn't void the warranty, and clean it on my own every month or so
I love working with my hands, crafts, outside, and I feel like my ring gets dirty so quickly. I figure FH paid quite a bit for it so I should try to keep it looking nice and try to get it cleaned once a month. I love walking out into the sun right after it gets cleaned, so sparkly!
I clean my E-ring myself frequently. I just use a baby toothbrush & Dawn dish soap. It REALLY brings the sparkle back. I also get free cleanings through our Jewelry store. Once I finally get to wear my wedding band I'll have to have it cleaned every 6 months because it comes with a diamond guarentee that REQUIRES it to be cleaned and inspected every 6 months to keep the warrenty going. Definitly worth the extra money. :)
Mine is a bezel setting but has little ramps up the side (hard to explain) but it creates space between the ramps and the setting and very hard to clean. So I take it to the jeweler every few months and have it cleaned. It definitely makes a difference!
I generally only get mine cleaned if I'm in the neighborhood of my jeweler, or if I have to go there for some other reason.
I clean mine at home probably weekly with nonabrasive soap and a toothbrush. Then i dry it with my hairdryer set to cool. It makes it pretty darn shiny! I agree though, there is NOTHING like that jewelery store shine!!
Sorry! I should've made myself clearer before... I got things mixed around in my head and was thinking of when you have your ring re-finished, not cleaned!
Bees! Your inspired me! I just went on my lunch break and had my ring cleaned! It looks brand new!
I clean mine at home every week, but have only had it cleaned twice at the jewelery store. I actually need to get my engagement ring resized, which I've been meaning to do for a while now. It's always been a little too big, but it fits differently now that it's sitting on top of my wedding band. Maybe I will try to do that this week, so that I can get it cleaned, too!
I have jewelry cleaner that I use about once a week. I take mine to the jewelry store twice a year for a good cleaning and a polish. I love a jewelry store clean. It is super shiny.
Oh, I should definitely remember to do this more often! When we went to look for wedding bands, our jeweler practically ripped the ring off my hand and took it to the back room to clean it. I guess it was THAT muddy. :)
Everytime I go to the mall (really not that frequently) I stop by Tiffanys and see if there is a wait for ring cleaning. They do a WONDERFUL job there. And I always feel like I have a new ring when I leave because its so sparkley!
Between professional cleanings you can make your ring *nearly* as shiny as a professional clean! Just dip your ring in steaming hot water for about 2 minutes. then scrub it with a soft toothbrush gently (don't use toothpaste though - it is abrasive to gold). Dry it with a lint free cloth and go! It will be shining like a brand new jewel when you're done - I promise! I clean mine about every other day because it is so easy! People always say "oh your ring is so shiny, you must have just gotten it cleaned..." I just smile and say "Yes, isn't she shiny!?!?"
I want to go shopping for FH's ring just as an excuse to get mine cleaned.
Mine came as a set and it's amazing how dull mine looks next to the wedding band and it's only been 7 months!
I can't clean mine myself because it is a bezel setting, but Mr. K brings it to the clinic and cleans it with dental equipment!
DEFINITELY get your ring cleaned as often as you can! I know that many rings' warranties will be void if you don't clean them at least once every 6 months...so be careful! Mine in particular isn't under that type of warranty, BUT my ring has micropave, so I need to be extra careful to bring it in to be checked for loose stones! So, not only is it nice to have it polished and shiny, but the jeweler can check for any loose stones...it would be awful if one were to fall out and you could have caught it by simply taking it in to the store to have it checked on!
I normally use piping hot water and a little bit of liquid soap every week or two and it starts looking pretty darn good. But I just had it professionally cleaned for the first time and I realized just how gross it gets, even when I think I've shined it up good.
I've never gotten my ring cleaned, but I only just got it in February. =) I do wash it often with hand soap, though.
I'm the same as MrsSl82be .. the jewler cleans it every six months when i go in for inspection.
We have a cleaning plan every 6 mos with the jeweler. In the meantime I just usually polish it. That is until the other day when I went to a wedding show and got free ring cleaner! It was A-MAZING. my ring is so shiny now! And it came with a little baby size brush to get into the prong setting. I went crazy and started cleaning all my rings... hehe
I have never gotten it cleaned and have been married over a YEAR
I know, I am bad... and should SOOOOO get my ring cleaned.
I clean it at home with my buffing cloths about once a week. I have to take in twice a year to get cleaned in order to keep our protection plan current. I'm due next month, and I'll probably take it in again a week or so before the wedding to make sure it's shiny and good to go!
It is weird that I'm affraid to take my ring somewhere to be cleaned b/c I don't want them to jack my diamond and replace it w/ something else? I'm a bit crazy :-/
I just take mine to the jeweler every 6 months. I've learned some great ring-cleaning techniques from WeddingBee, and I do those every week or two to get it looking just as good.

I was engaged 10 months ago, and I just got my ring cleaned yesterday! I always thought my ring wasn't that dirty, until a friend of mine got engaged and I saw her ring. My diamond looked so DULL compared to hers! Now that I got it cleaned it looks sparkly and new again.
So GO GET YOUR RING CLEANED!
