My husband and I never planned on having children, but once we found out we were expecting we haven’t had to change our decor too much.  However, we bought our house just after we got engaged, so we haven’t had to move anything since our wedding.  I personally wouldn’t start investing time/effort into decorating a place unless I knew I was going to be there for at least a few years.  I think it really depends on your tastes and what your timeline looks like.

vanessa7:  DH owns our home and we plan on staying here for at least 5 years. We will then rent it out and build our dream home. I adored my place, but it was long distance and DH really wanted me to be closer (at that time we were dating). My only requirement when I left my place was that it was contingent on both of us selling most of our stuff and starting anew, as far as decor went… Making his home “ours”. Well, we got engaged and so the wedding became our priority. Now that we have been married since Feb, we have started on the home.

Since this will not be our “forever home”, we are only making cosmetic changes… No remodeling or anything like that. Every weekend we do something to change it. First was to repaint the entire interior. We actually had someone do this while we were on vaca, which was awesome to come home to! What a transformation from that alone! Next, I went and changed out living room pillows, throw blankets, and other minor details to play around with color palettes and determine what color sofas and such we wanted. Next was sofa/chairs, area rugs, curtains and light fixtures. I pick up decor like statement pieces, art, etc. As I go.

We will TTC in 1-2 years, and I have been trying to be practical with our purchases. So, instead of a white couch, we went with grey leather. We are trying to stay away from any light colored items or potentially dangerous items for future baby. With that being said, my only other priorities are then aesthetics AND comfort, which I’ve found can be hard to find both in a single piece.

Like you, we are getting everything from a variety of sources. I shop around at Overstock, IKEA, Home Goods, Target, Pier 1 and Z Gallerie. I also have a lot of apps like Ideeli, Gilt, Haute Look and Rue LaLa that I browse. Once I finish with the main areas, I will move onto bathrooms, etc. DH is more classic and I like a very modern look, so he is just sort of letting me take the reins and will just chime in when he has a preference… Or, when he blatantly doesn’t like something that we are looking at.

I’m thinking (hoping!) we will be done with the majority of it within the next few months.
