Going off birth control pill question….specifically Alesse or generic form

I wasn’t on Alesse, but I recently went off Yasmin. This is my first cycle off birth control in like, a decade. I gained a lot of what is hopefully water weight – about five pounds overnight – which was a real bummer, since I thought I’d be losing weight. I also noticed a lot of horomonal changes right away – my skin broke out like crazy the first week, and I had a lot of sore boobs and crampy feelings the second week. I’ve been charting, though, and it looks like I ovulated right on schedule. DH and I are using NFP and pulling out to avoid pregnancy for the next five or six months, but might add in a barrier method too, just to be safe. Good luck!

I was on Avianne, the generic of Alesse I think and my cycle has been whack since coming off.   Knowing what I know now, I’d come off now and chart or whatever.  My first cycle off was 90+ days, then a normal 45 day followed by another 95 day cycle and the last one was normal.  It’s been 10 months since stopping and i’m finally on my 5th and hopefully back to normal cycles.

@mckeestephanie:  Make sure to finish the pills in your last pack so that you have your period and start a new cycle without the hormones.  If you’re going off a year before actually TTC, make sure to use a backup method of birth control like condoms or a diaphram.  It took about 6 months for my cycles to fall into a predictable rhythm after going off BCPs.

@mckeestephanie:  Natural Family Planning – I’m charting my basal body temperature and cervical mucus observations to (hopefully) predict when I’m fertile. We’re also using the withdrawal method for extra protection.

I was on Aviane as well, which is the generic. It took my body about 4 months to regulate my cycles, but the first month we TTC (my 5th cycle off the pill) we successfully got pregnant on the first try. It won’t harm anything to TTC while your cycle is wonky, but if you have a specific time you’d like to try and get pregnant around then I suggest getting off about 6 months before.

@mckeestephanie:  I got off Yaz about a month ago and I too gained like 8lbs overnight. I was freaking out because I had to fit into my dress! Luckily it was water weight and by the time my first normal period came around, I was back to normal. I have also noticed an increase in my sex drive which is rather nice because it was pretty much non-existant before.

Oh and like you, we aren’t TTC until next year or so but I just wanted to give my body a rest and time to regulate itself before we started trying.

Also to add, we used the same method as KatieBklyn to avoid pregnancy for the 4 months that we did. We weren’t married yet and while we didn’t mind being pregnant if it happened, we avoided it a bit so I wouldn’t be pregnant for our wedding. We just avoided the most fertile days (I was charting) and used the withdrawl method. I got pregnant on our honeymoon when we decided to TTC. If you 100% don’t want to get pregnant before a certain timeframe though I would probably use a non hormonal form of BD until you are ready.

@mckeestephanie:  I have been off Alesse for nearly 10 years now and since then my period has been ridiculously sporadic. My cycle is anywhere from 28 to 40 days (yeah I take a lot of pregnancy tests).

@mckeestephanie:  I was off of Avianne for four months, and haven’t had a period since (I just went back on because other methods didn’t end up suiting us).  My skin broke out quite a bit (not unbearable because I never had any acne, but I consistently had a few pimples at a time).  I felt really great being off the pill (emotionally), and am really bummed I have to go back on it.
