    Hello Ladies!

I'm currently making the agonizing decision if I should go and see my favorite band of all time (Phish) for their potential NYE show in NYC this year.  By that time I will be about 20-21 weeks pregnant and was curious if anyone has done this?  Obviously I know smoke and such should be avoided and seats are preferred during the concert but just curious if any other bees have had this experience?

    Thoughts?

@nskillet: I think that it is perfectly fine to go to a concert while you are pregnant. I would just fear the amazing amount of people that might be at this particular concert and if the crowds could get rowdy. I think it also depends on where it is. If it's in a venue with seating and you can just stay in your zone, then I don't think it should be a concern.

I went to two concerts while pregnant.  We had seats and it wasn't a crazy crowd though.  Baby would dance then fall asleep.

My first concert was Journey. My mom was 8 months pregnant and I'm totally normal har har!

Seriously it's fine, just don't lay down on a speaker or anything.

As long as you don't mosh pit or anything, it should be fine. Have a good time now while your feeling well!

Thanks ladies! You have reassured me!

Yeah, we're all just swaying hippies honestly.  Phish isn't a very LOUD band either (as far as amptitude) and the rumored place the NYE show to be at MSG (Madison Square Garden) which is an ENORMOUS venue with lots of ample seating and places to move around.  This will kinda be my last opportunity to see them for awhile as baby is due on May 15thish and they typically tour summers/falls.

I was having some slight mommy-guilt but appreciate all the feedback!

    THANK YOU!

@KatyElle: That explains so much. Lol! (Jk, of course!)

I'm with Katy, Phish concert goers are more likely to break into a spontaneous joint passing party than a mosh pit. In my experience, anyway.

We went to a Social Distortion concert when I was just a few weeks preggo.  I don't see a problem with it.

Just because you are pregnant does not mean that you cant partake in normal activites. Aside from drinking, smoking etc lol. Especially because you will only be around 20 weeks, you should be just fine going to a concert. Just be careful! Have fun go with your hunny and remember to really enjoy your pregnancy it will be the last time you can go out and have fun with your hunny or your friends and not have a baby or worry about your baby not being with  you lol. Go the the concert and have fun. Pretty soon you will be a mommy!!

I am a concert nut! I went to a pretty crazy show about 2 weeks before I delivered my son. The only bit of advise I can give is if you are feeling tired or notice more movement than normal take a break. Also, if you find that people aren't being respectful of your space while in line, just say something, you have every right! :)

Like others have said Phish should be fine, not like you are going to Rob Zombie or something nutso! ;) Enjoy yourself! OOOOH... and... require that your guy pamper you prior to/following the show! It will make the BABY happy! hee hee

I say go for it. I've always loved seeing pregnant chicks at rock shows. I used to go out all the time but now I'm just a married homebody. I hope to see more shows when we finally get pregnant so I can be that cool chick.

It depends on the venue.  If it's a small bar or something, I wouldn't go.  They tend to get really hot and sweaty and you get pushed around, regardless of proximity to moshing.

Ok, I'm going to put myself out there.  I've been to jam bands concerts like Phish, Moe. and Dave Matthews band concerts before.  The only thing I would be afraid of is the pot smoking.  I know when I went to a recent Moe. concert there was a lot of it. I was getting second hand smoke high from it.

I, also, know that sometimes pot can be laced with that other things, too.

That would be my only concern.

I'm not pregnant so I don't know if there is a link between pot smoke and being pregnant. Maybe something you should look into?

I know being pregnant there are a lot of things you should stay away from and sometimes you have to pick and choose what to follow.

I'm not saying you shouldn't go but maybe look into it.

Now, I do know that back in the 70s, there was woodstock and I bet a lot of pregnant women were exposed to all kinds of stuff and I'm sure the babies came out fine.

Sorry, about this post but if it were me, that's what I would be concerned about.

I'm a huge Phish fan, too.  I'd go.  I haven't come home from a Phish show smelling like smoke in YEARS.  The venues are larger and the crowd is older these days.

My observation: the more college kids there are at a show and the smaller the venue, the more smoke there seems to be.

It makes sense that a moe. show (small venue) or a DMB show (tons of college kids) would be super smokey.

EDIT: You never know...making a sign to say this is your baby's first Phish show would probably get a mention.  At Portsmouth, they had all their kids on stage (including "Question Mark O'Connell") and sang Harpua to a woman's mother.

MSG = no smoking and assigned seating.  You will be fine as long as there is no stampede.  And it wouldn't matter if you were pregnant or not in that case.

Roseland Ballroom or another similar venue?  I would skip.

oh no, theres still a ton of smoking at phish. and it doesnt matter how big the venue is, the odds are pretty good that someone will light up in the row in front of you, behind you, or next to you. and heading for the "nosebleed" sections isnt the safe bet; thats where a lot of people just go to sit and smoke throughout the whole show without being hassled, theres usually not too many security guards patrolling up there.

I would totally go.  My only concern would be the sheer amount of 2nd hand pot smoke that you will probably breathe.  Hopefully there's a way you can minimize that...

Perhaps things are really different at MSG?  I'm from up there, but I haven't been to a show at MSG.  The last indoor shows I went to were Hampton and John Paul Jones.  I'm the type that showers when I come home if my hair is smokey.  I didn't have to wash my hair after those shows.

then you didnt go to 09 Phish at Hampton. thats where i met my husband. i'm pretty sure 8 out of 10 people inside each night smoked SOMETHING. if the OP is the type that needs to wash hair after a show (tho i doubt she is) then she shouldn't be going to 3.0 Phish  (ok ok PT will argue 3.1 but i digress)

So long as you can get away from the crowd and keep yourself hydrated, I say, go for it!

My friends played the Bell Centre in Montreal at the beginning of the month and there was no way I was going to miss that (even if at 27 weeks pregnant). I felt great and now my son has a cool story to tell later in his life, lol..

I will say by the time we got back to the hotel I collapsed though - my legs were a bit puffy and I was beyond exhausted. I had the best time though!

I saw Phish at around 35 weeks preggo... and I was NOT the most pregnant one there :) I don't think. It's was an outdoor aphitheatre show - we were in the 'seats'. There were also VERY VERY tiny babies there :)

I think my little guy might have even gotten his first contact buzz :)

(BTW - This was my first Phish concert - it's hubby's fav band!)

@KatyElle:  LMAO  My son went to RUSH in utero... the jury's still out.

    ***

My only concern being preggo at 3 different concerts (RUSH, Fleetwood Mac, and -not my fav- TOOL) was the pot/ cig smoke.  I left TOOL b/c the smoke was so thick.  Other than that, it's probably stimulating for the baby to hear all the noise.

Hello My Fellow Phanners!! Wow, so nice to see some ladies on here that are phans too!!  And the smoking was my main concern in addition to just how packed the shows can get.

@Mudrat I seriously got the lulz from that fluffhead sign.  Hubby and I ALMOST had a custom wedding cake topper with us holding a "Fluffhead" sign but decided to go with Pez last minute. How romantic you guys met @ Hampton! We did a ton of shows this past year and I've seen them nearly 40 times since they came back in 2009.  Absolutely my favorite place on earth to be, but also am VERY aware of my surroundings and indoor is a minor concern of mine.  My thought process is its one show, but I also don't want to be that selfish chick with the baby strapped to her killing everyones buzz, you know? Also just out of sheer curisosity..do you PT?  Also, agree about the temps but it was exceptionally warm in the city during those runs with massive amounts of snow falling a few days previous.

@Jeanine I totally agree that the scene has cleaned up in 3.0 but that being said, I do worry about the smoke issue.  I never have left a show smelling, but I don't exactly feel comfortable telling people to knock it off at one of the most free experiences people get to enjoy during limited times of the year, especially NYE. I figure if I get bothered by it I can move to another area where it might be more forgiving.  The further back, and even behind the stage can sometimes be a free zone and I can always move. You're right about them topping Meatstick though.  I was at the 2010/11 NY's run and was absolutely thrilled with their performance.

I think I've all but made my mind up that I'm going to go, and basically just move/sit/drink tons of water/and not rage too hard.  My husband is so thrilled, as next year will be a light touring year for the band and for us.

I'm glad to meet some phishettes too! I actually don't have a single female friend who is a fan.

@nskillet: If life every throws you a chance to live in Charlottesville come on down.  You'd love it.  The jamband crowd is large, but tight here.

Red Light Management and MusicToday being here means we always have great shows.  Hampton, Portsmouth, Merriweather, and Walnut Creek aren't too far, either. :)

@mudrat2: Whoa! Not sure what I did to upset you.  At a large show, we can all have difference experiences, right?

@nskillet   whats up girl! fluffhead sign was a must--in fact we still have it and my husband said "wtf are we supposed to do with this?" my response was simple--what else would we use a fluffhead sign for? PT VALIDATION BABY!  :)     i said the next time it makes an appearance, maybe it will be the Dr. holding it up behind us in the delivery room.

question though--you said thought process is, its one show. rumor is four nights....?   And yes, we PT. Him more than me, I've gotten sucked into the "other" green board (WB).

of course you're going to go! I've thought that if i'm pregnant maybe we should do the NYE run but then reality hits and its like, who am i kidding, of course we will be there...  we "pre-honeymoon'd" and did all of west coast tour this year plus SBIX and Bethel and a number of east coast/mid west shows. We even have a bunch of prints that have been purchased especially for the baby's nursery!

    Congrats on the pregnancy!!
