This is what I used:
http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/5k.html
I went from not being able to run more than a block to doing a half marathon in 4 months :D And I weigh over 200lbs!
You can do it! Congrats and good luck
my advice: dont focus on constant running. Its ok to stop and walk but make sure you limit yourself with walking time.
I definitely agree with daniellealys ; don't focus on constant running! That's always been my big hang-up on the gym at the treadmills. Plus I always seem to get stuck between the two natural born runners!
You can do it! I may even start one of those plans with you :)
oh that would be exciting! any other bees want to join?
thanks for the advice ladies i really appreciate it! I'm from a small town with only 2 treadmills at the gym (where I will run during the winter) so I hope the other treadmill occupant won't be an elite marathon runner or something! haha
I am doing my first 10k in September. I did a 5 mile run on Thanksgiving, but nothing else longer than that. I have a hard time running in the cold or on a treadmill so am waiting for it to warm up.
I did Couch to 5k a two years and a month ago. I'll be running my third half marathon in 3 weeks (2 weeks before my wedding). I hated running at first, but now I love it. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you enjoy it. You have plenty of time!
I will be doing my first 10k in Marchl. I am super excited yet a little nervous since I've never run that long before. I'm glad to know that there are others our there just like me =) Good Luck and have fun!
Awesome! i did my first 10k plan in april of last year- I had been running for awhile already- it was a walk/run plan, and I ran my first 15k in July. After dealing with some injury issues, I ran multiple 10ks in the fall and two half marathons. Thsi can be done!!! I'm now running 20 miles per week and building a base for marathon training, with two halves back to back in March! This can be done!
I am doing the couch to 5k now and love it...I have my first 5k scheduled for March, then I think I'll do a 10K in June/July time frame...
wow glad to hear all the success stories!! today was session two of week one! haha slowly but surely!
Just keep with it. Push yourself, but only as much as you can. I have never done one, but I am going to do one this year, it's my goal! I actually did my first run for the year ( I was off for a month), and it felt SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good. I can't wait to go back tomorrow. :)
Goodluck!
Im running a 10k in march! I ran track/cross country in high school and since then Ive run some 5k's but its been a LONNNGGG time since I ran a 10k or anything over it (I used to run them everyday! Crazy!). I started by running in my neighborhood and gradually increasing my distance. I also cycle between longer and shorter runs, but never shorter than 2 miles, which I can now do without stopping (yay). Ive been training for 3 weeks now I can already tell the difference in my endurance. You just have to keep at it!
I started the c25k program in oct 2010 and have run 2 offical 5 k's..doing an 8 k race on mar 4 and a 10 k on apr 29.
i reccommend the c25k program to anyone who wants to learn to run. it's amazing!!
and i've lost 80 lbs since :)
I must say, I get so excited when I see others beginning to train for a race :-p. I've been runner for several years now, and it is truly my my (other) life-long love. I hated running growing up. I looked at it as just a way to get in shape or lose weight :-/ Not cool. One day my girlfriend told me she signed up for a half marathon (13.1 miles!) and asked if I wanted to do it with her and her friend, neither of which had ever run a race that distance before! I was so reluctant, but considering it was the Disney Princess Half Marathon, I totally gave in! We trained for nearly 3 months in hopes that we would just finish this race! And we did. It is absolutely the best feeling in the world to cross the finish line and know that you've completed something that so many people never even try. Since then, I've been running running running. Unfortunately, I'm in nursing school and havent been racing, but my goal is to train for and complete a full marathon once I'm finished.
As far as training, I wouldn't suggest using a 5k plan to train for a 10k. I use the website runnersworld.com for basically anything I want to know that is running related.
Here is their 10k plan for beginners:
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244-259-13711-0,00.html
They also have a FREE iphone app called Smart Coach which lets you enter all your information and it creates a running plan for you. You can even choose which day you want your long run to be and how many miles you want to run each week.
The best advice I can give you is to just enjoy yourself. Running should be enjoyable. Yes, I said it, enjoyable! Don't kill yourself on the treadmill either. I find that I get bored very quickly running inside. Find someplace where you can run a nice loop and get outside! There is another website that I use called mapmyrun.com (they also have a free app that will track your run by gps and give you the distance you ran and the time is took). This is great to help create a running route if you don't know of anyplace.
