Our invitations are very elegant and simple, and we used black ink, however our names are in a gold ink and it looks awesome!! Tomorrow, I will try to upload the invitation so you can see how it looks. Super classy. I say do it!
Ahh, time out...BLACK INVITATIONS! I read your post too quick. I still say go for it! I think it would look awesome! Not sure about the thermography printing...sorry!
Engraving would be a good process for printing gold on black.
Or you could get gold paper and print the entire background in black, sort of like the reverse?

Not sure about the thermography printing, but what I am considering doing is stamping with Gold ink. Not sure if your willing to go the DIY route but you can buy a custom stamp up to a very large size (even 5x7 so its your whole invite) and then ink it with gold ink (i recommend color box gold ink I tried another brand and it was awful), you could even then emboss it after so its raised.

I'm thinking of getting black invitations and have gold printing done on it but I haven't been able to find anything that I like. When you're getting gold printing done does it have to be thermography printing? Has anyone else done anything similar to this? Thanks :)
