Rihanna's older stuff (aka not this new album), Janet Jackson?, your DJ should have a list of stuff, too. I'll go through my ipod playlist and send post a list of clean-ish stuff I have tonight :)
We're doing our music without a DJ too. We also have a mostly older guest list, with about a dozen or so 18-35 year olds in there. I posted about suggestions, but didn't get any replies, so hopefully more people will post here with suggestions. I also have some songs that I've already put together, so I'll post that once I get home and can access it from my laptop.
I don't typically listen to music, so I have no idea what is popular or good to dance too, but I want to make sure there is music for myself and my friends to dance to. A wedding is just about the only time I dance.
If you get the radio edit version of anything you should be fine. usually the cursing and profanity's omitted.
For me at least, I not only want to avoid cursing, but also the types of songs that have cursing in them. They tend to have themes of sex and violence that I don't like. But I'm sure it's worth a try for some songs.
You can never go wrong with JT, Usher (yeah), Britney Spears (I know, but it's fun to dance to) and some Luda :)
yeah I know about radio edits... but I am not a big "Top 40" person, I listen to a lot of country music. Or hard rock like Breaking Benjamin. So I'm not really all that familiar with popular dance music, except the stuff on my 80's list haha.
and not just avoiding sexual songs (my parents wouldn't be so thrilled), but also songs heavy with negative content like drugs and drinking...
Any more suggestions?
I kinda like Rihanna, does she have any love songs? or fun dancing songs?
I'm gonna go look at my list of songs from my wedding and write some down for you :)
pump it- black eyed peas
yeah- ludacris
run it- chris brown
1 2 step- ciara
Right Round- Flo Rida feat. Kesha
Bottle Pop- Pussycat Dolls
Poker Face- Lady Gaga
If You Seek Amy- Britney Spears
Out Of My Mind (Radio Edit)- Lasgo
Boom Boom Pow- Black Eyed Peas
Sexy Back- Justin Timberlake
Low- Flo Rida
Just Dance- Lady Gaga
Snap Yo Fingers: Lil Jon feat. E-40 & Sean P
Toxic- Britney Spears
Cha Cha slide- Mr. C
temperature- sean paul
Kesha- tik tok and blah blah blah (kind iffy on the clean part)
@Bella: If she is trying to avoid sexual connotations in her songs I don't think "Right Round" would be so appropriate
Low by Flo Rida is "clean"? I could never (and would never) play that in front of my g'ma and niece.
"She turned around and gave that big booty a smack (hey)...
... Them birthday cakes they stole the show
So sexual
She was flexible professional
Drinking X&O"
This is what I mean... I googled the lyrics to about 6 of the songs on that list (that Bella posted) and they are sexual and/or have profanity.
Toxic by Brittaney spears is sexual, and the pussycat dolls song wait a minute has this line in it... "Dropped down his jeans like I'm supposed to drop to my knees"
And from Chilg-A-Ling... "If you talk a lot, in your mouth you get socked" and "Let him hit it once, and watch the dude come back". Disturbia by Rhianna sounds like she's talking about a schizophrenic, definitely not wedding appropriate. Black Eyed Peas' song Imma Be "Imma be rockin' like this, wat
Y'all niggas wanna talk shit, but
Why don't you put it on the blog, nigga?
Rockin' like this my job, nigga"
@Bella: I only laugh because I work with kids as young as 6 and I catch them singing that song, radio edit version of course
!! They have no clue what they are singing but i put a stop to it as soon as I hear the words come out of their mouth
di5308-Thanks for calling me out and making me feel like a b*t*h.
I was just trying to help out by posting some songs that were on my list from my wedding. I never said any of them were clean. OP is welcome to go through my list and weed out the ones she doesn't find appropriate.
I'm not calling anyone out, but the post is titled "good clean HIP HOP/R&B music". t wasn't my intent to make you feel bad. I guess my idea of good/clean is very different from yours.
It's a personal pet peeve that I've struggled with since we decided to do the music for our reception (mainly due to the mainstream dance music that many DJs play being so inappropriate in our eyes). The mainstream dance music out there is awful, in terms of themes and messages, not to mention language, so it's hard to find decent songs to dance to with positive messages and no profanity. I can't understand if most of your guests are younger, but to me it's just so inappropriate for a family wedding, with kids and older guests who are more likely to find it offensive.
Though these songs do have a line or two, no one will be analyzing the lyrics to your music! as long as there is no heavy bleeping or strings of profanities i think you're safe..
Obviously each individual must make the decision on what is appropriate. For me, it's not even close. The songs, based on there themes and messages, aren't even appropriate for a wedding, IMO. It just appalls and frightens me that this is what is out there for kids and teens to listen to. And we wonder why our generation's kids have so many problems.
Anyway, hopefully I'll find some really clean dance songs with positive/appropriate messages for our reception. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.
Again - songs like Imma Be comes in a clean version, like everything else out there in the world. A lot of radio stations won't promote a singer unless there is a clean version. I.E. - Rude Boy by Rihanna, profane version, clean version.
Kumbayah.
@Bella: Ohhhh, you had some really good suggestions! Honestly, when I think of "dirty" songs, I think of things like Trina's "No Panties", The Akynele song (I won't even type it here), etc. I defintely don't think of stuff that they play on Top 40 stations! I guess I don't pay attention to the lyrics that closely.
I'll check my IPod and see if I can come up with any. I sort of think clean hip hop songs is an oxymoron ;o)
Eh, those songs are fine. It is really almost impossible to realise what they are talking about in most of them unless you analyse word for word. Especially things like Toxic by Britney.
I think the Flor'Rida song would not be appropriate though.
By and large, sticking with mostly R'n'B will be fine. Heavy on the Rihanna (GGGB album) and Beyonece plus some Ne-Yo and a ton of Usher and Justin Timberlake always works.
You can take out the curse words, but you can't change the messages in the songs.
Also, lots of Drake songs or Kanye West songs work well for 'clean' hip hop songs. Well clean-er anyway.
when all else fails, go with WILL SMITH! getting jiggy with it na na na na na. If you understand jiggy to be about dancing, that is.
Okay, here's some
American Boy - Estelle
Boys - Britney Spears (I mean it's sort of sexual, but really just about a guy and girl wanting to dance I guess)
Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
Disturbia - Rihanna
Excuse Me Miss - Jay-Z
Get Right - Jennifer Lopez
Fergalicious - Fergie
Glamorous - Fergie
Jumpin Jumpin - Destiny's Child
Real Love - Mary J. Blige
Rock Your Body - Justin Timberlake
Switch - Will Smith
Single - New Kids on the Block (this is their new album, not the 80s one)
SOS - Rihanna
LoL@ MelissaBegins! Did you ever see the sketch about him on Family Guy? He's rapping "respect women, eat your veggies, listen to your parents."
"This is what I mean... I googled the lyrics to about 6 of the songs on that list (that Bella posted) and they are sexual and/or have profanity."
The songs I posted may not work for you, and I respect that, but I think it's for the OP to decide. This is her post. If she doesn't like them she doesn't have to add them to her list. Like I said I was just trying to help out by giving some examples of what was on my list for my wedding.
I'm not sure how this turned into an appropriate wedding song debate. Can we get back to trying to help the OP?
-Evacuate the dancefloor is kind of a fun song. I don't think it's dirty. She's singing about dancing in a club in it though.
-The cupid shuffle is really fun and it's not dirty at all.
-I just read the lyrics for Rhianna's song S.O.S and I don't see anything dirty about it.
@hotchild! No i haven't seen the sketch, but I'll be hitting youtube/hulu when i get home! hehe.
And.. now i'm going to play "Wild Wild West" off my shameful playlist on my ipod :-D
Cascada is a good suggestion. "evacuate the dance floor" and "everytime we touch."
Ooooh, thought of a few more:
Run It - Chris Brown
Yo - Chris Brown
Fantasy (remix) Mariah Carey
Anything by Miley Cyrus
OOOoo I'll play! I teach hip hop so often I have to have censored versions of the song so I have a HUGE playlist-- (sorry if some are repeats) Old school is a great option too!
I have not googled the lyrics on these but I play the clean versions in my dance classes--- hope this helps! People will be dancing and having a great time not listening to the lyrics-- I wanna have a dance party right now! :)
ooo I was writing so I missed the suggestion BUT LOVE WILL SMITH TOO!!! ahhh corny 90s music!!! :)
You know...music at a reception is usually so loud it's hard to tell exactly what all the lyrics are anyway. I hope none of the OPs guests will be that nitpicky.
I recently went to a Singles dance hosted by a Mormon church (my friend is Mormon and she invited me) and they had quite a few "Clean" versions of those songs other people have listed, including some of the ones Bella said. There is no one more conservative than the Mormon church. They don't watch R rated movies or curse at all!!!
Some of the songs they had were:
Chris Brown: Forever
Lady Gaga: Just Dance
Neyo: Closer
Black Eyed Peas: I Gotta Feeling
Sean Kingston: Beautiful Girls
Jay Z: Empire State of Mind
TPain: Freeze
TI: Live your Life
As for the lyrics di5308 posted from Imma Be, um obviously those aren't in the clean version. You can buy clean OR explicit.
@kate169 - I agree, most of the time at receptions, people don't hear the majority of the lyrics of songs. They will mainly just hear the verses, so I think clean versions of any of the songs suggested on this thread would be fine. I know nobody wants to offend or embarass older relatives, but in my experience, most of the older relatives that would be offended leave pretty early, so save the more "explicit" songs for later in the evening!
I think there are some songs in there that would be okay, but others I wouldn't play either. I don't particularly agree with the idea that just because people don't know what's being sung, that you should just play it. But then again if people are worried about dancing, maybe it doesn't matter.
I do have to agree with di5308 though that much of the popular music today has negative themes. I work with kids, so they hear these songs and it definitely does have an affect on them, normalizing behaviors that kids shouldn't know about, much less be talking about or doing.
The suggestions are helpful though, as I'm doing my own music too (no DJ).
uh...was gonna say some from the Glee cds...bust a move, bust the windows out ya car, my life would suck without you...gold digger, but they are all not good at a wedding. Darn!

I'm looking for some suggestions for some good hip hop/top 40 style music to play at my dance, something like Replay, Sean Kingston and Forever Chris Brown - we have mostly an older generation, so most of our music is geared towards them - lots of 80's music, but I want some for me and my friends.
Any good ideas?
Thanks
