Yesterday, my mom and I went to a baby shower for a family friend. Among the guests was the grandmother of the person for whom the shower was thrown. She’s in her late 80s, adorable as can be, and she happens to read palms. She had read my mom’s palm years ago with scary accuracy, so my mom pulled me by the hand to get her to read mine.
It started out fine: she said that I was a “flashy little thing” who “didn’t like to stay still and was constantly keeping busy.” This is true, I love to dress in really bright clothing and cut/style my hair in edgy ways (though yesterday I was dressed conservatively), and in regard to my career, I am always working to advance myself and trying to find better opportunities. She then said “I’ll make a prediction…I see you winning some award or prize.” This, of course, got me excited! We put an offer on a house last week, so getting it would totally be a prize!
She said that I had several girl friends (true), but that one was jealous of me from the outside looking in.
Then she started to tell me about my love life. She said that I had dated someone shorter than me, and that it didn’t work out, and the guy I am with now is charming and has a sparkle in his eye. TOTALLY FI! She THEN tells me that though we’ll have a long relationship, this is not the person she sees me with, and that there will be a third man to sweep me off my feet. At this point, I abruptly raise my left hand to show her my ring, and we all crack up laughing.
I know this sort of thing means absolutely nothing, but isn’t that still a little disconcerting? I’ve had my palm read in the past by someone else who also told me that I would have three relationships in my life…and the last one would come when I’m older, and THAT one would be the true love of my life.
Has anyone else had any crazy predictions that left them feeling a little jarred?

Eh, I take anything like that with a grain of salt. I’ve seen a few programs and read some books on how people use visual cues and vague guesses to “feel out” your responses to their questions/minor predictions and proceed from there to get an “accurate” reading for you. I think it doesn’t take much to believe almost anything someone tells you, especially if they manage a few good guesses at the start.
I once had a palm reader tell me that the guy I’d been after for a while (FI) wasn’t the guy for me and she saw a red-headed, younger man I’d meet that year (4 years ago) who would be “the one”.
I started dating FI a month later, there was never any younger red-headed man and we’re now happily engaged sooooo…

I mean, if her prediction is true, you won’t know until you’re older, so there isn’t anything you can do. Just live your life for now!

I did it once and it was incredibly accurate. That’s why I’m always scared to do those kinds of things again. I’d rather just live life without wondering when something predicted could happen.

When I was 14 or 15, I had a psychic tell me I was going to get divorced. Nice. That’s stuck with me over the years, but really, I’ll take it with a grain of salt like the others have said. I saw another psychic a few months back and she told me that DH and I would have a long and happy life together, and that he adored me and we made each other better people. I’ll take her prediction over the first 😉 Seek a second opinion!

I was going to say the exact same thing redheadem said, that you won’t know if the prediction comes true for a long time to come, so don’t worry about it now. I had my palm read many years ago and was shocked at the reading, but the prediction came true a long time later. And I have a very happy and blessed life now. Trust life and yourself and all will be well.

The thing with those “predictions” is that they are vague enough that the individual can tailor them to fit with their life. For example, there will be a third man to sweep me off my feet could mean you will have a son in your future and he will become the love of your life, as is common with a mother-child bond.

I saw a psychic 7 years ago who VERY accurately predicted my marriage and having a baby. She said I was going to move somewhere down south, meet a man with brown hair and blue eyes. Within 18 months we’d be married and have a child. At the time I was dating the man I thought I was going to be with, and I wasn’t even thinking about moving nor did I know anyone down south.
A few months later we broke up, and my best friend who had recently transferred to a job down south offered to help me find a place near her. I had completely forgotten about the psychic until I got engaged, and my friend was like “OMG it’s just like the psychic said!!” (she was with me, we had our readings at the same time). I got chills!
Not to freak you out, but stranger things have happened.

@MapleMoose: I like your interpretation!!

@MapleMoose: Exactly! It’s the same thing with horoscopes, they’re vague and undetailed so anyone can take one and apply it to their life and find meaning.
I once read my mom a different horoscope from the one under her star sign and she went ON AND ON about how chillingly accurate it was and blah blah blah. She was so mad when I told her she wasn’t a Pisces so it didn’t apply 😛

Eh, I had a palm reader tell me at 13 that I would be a nurse or a teacher and have 2 girls and a boy.

Well, guys, let’s just hope that either it’s a son or a whirlwind romance I’ll have in a nursing home when I’m 80. 🙂 No real use in fretting over something that may or may not be when I’m so happy in my relationship! It’s just a little freaky…

@LizLemon: Haha, love the image of a whirlwind nursing home romance 🙂 I’d definitely not put a single ounce of stock into it and plunge forward into your happy life with FI.
