My current computer became mine abut 2.5 years ago, when my gifted macbook spontaneously died. Basically it was the cheapest little netbook in the JR store.
I like the little bugger and it serves my needs just well enough… but I’m starting to get this feeling I’ve never had before. I’ve always been too poor to even consider a voluntary upgrade – I’ve only ever replaced a computer because my computer died. I’ve never gotten a new one just because I wanted a better computer… how frivolous, says the frugal survivor voice in my head.
The one I’m ogling is an acer, 15.6 inches, 6GB ram, 750GB HDD, solid battery, decent speakers and a great webcam (both of which would be a huge upgrade over my barely usable speakers and webcam currently.) Its about twice the weight, which is a downer, but 5.7 pounds really isn’t too bad, I’m just so used to my featherweight one. Newegg is running a really fantastic deal on it. The cost is a little over a week’s pay.
The reason I don’t want to wait, is that living in Korea, electronics are VERY expensive (somewhat paradoxically) and I don’t really want to buy a new computer here, and shipping one here would be PAINFUL in terms of duties and taxes. (Possibly half the cost of the computer.) I’m visiting my home country very soon so I could easily have the new baby shipped to my family and just tote it back to Korea with me on the way home, no fuss or stress or added cost, so that’s a really big factor.
If my current one died -knock wood- at a less convenient time, it would really mess things up for me as I’d suddenly be paying a massive premium to replace it and wouldn’t be able to get something as nice as a result.
TL;DR Have more money than absolutely necessary for the first time in my life, am possibly experiencing lifestyle creep?

I have an acer and I love it! I say do it!

Definitely buy it! I’m an American currently living in Denmark and I know all too well the pain of paying WAY more for something I know I could get for a fraction of the price back home.

You may be experiencing a “lifestyle creep” (I sure did when I started working full time!) but as long as you don’t blow all your money upgrading everything and buying tons of new things than I think that’s totally okay! I say do it 🙂

@Bebealways: you need to do this. 🙂 Trust me. You’ve outlined plenty of logical reasons for this, but the best reason is more emotional. You work hard, you don’t usually have much expendable income (it seems) and you’ve finally found something you just want. Everyone needs to be able to just blow some cash on occassion. My mom calls it fun money.
DO THIS. You will be shocked how long the feeling of contentment lasts. 🙂

@Bebealways: Hey, Acers are great. They have way less problems than other computers.
You can also look into having one built. I had my tower built for about $800, and I have 2 Terabytes of harddrive space, 8 GB of ram, a quad-core processor… basically I love this thing. I can have photoshop, Firefox with multiple tabs, and a game with the settings on high running all at the same time with no lag.
I ordered mine from ibuypower.com. It took about 6 weeks to get to me, but it runs like a dream and the wait was totally worth it. They always have specials going on and there laptops look pretty cool. I don’t know if you could get anything better priced from them or not.

I’d wait until the new version of Windows 8 comes out. It’s likely to improve a lot of the frustrating things about the OS.
