Sounds a little cheap to me. I'd think the couple skimped on the food. : (8 votes)

I've been shopping around for caterers in my area and I've found that many from this area do not have a whole lot of options, especially for my budget.  There is one, and I've heard great things about them, that have an endless list of menu items.

The owner suggested that, with my budget, we go with the gourmet burger bar.  They grill angus beef patties, as well as chicken breasts, veggie options like portobello musrooms and roasted chiles, and offer tons of toppings and bread options.  Sides would be a salad, sweet potato fries, onion rings and poppers.

I think it sounds fun, but I worry about what my guests will think.  If you went to a wedding that served burgers for dinner, what would you think?

I think a burger bar is a great idea! If you're having a casual wedding, it will go with that feel and if you're having a more formal event, it will be a fun surprise!

That sounds just yummy to me!  There's a small restaurant chain in LA county (I think it's just LA?) called the Counter.  They serve up gourmet burgers with toppings, and the place is such a hit.  I think it'll be a lot of fun.

As long as you had chicken I would think it was pretty cool. I don't need hoity toity hors d'oeuvres. :)

I think it would be fab.  Just play up the gourmet-ness of it all.  Nice signs indicating what all the toppings are would really look fancy.  Serve locally brewed beers alongside and you've got yourself a party.

I think this sounds like a really great idea.  Especially, what if you had a diner type theme to the reception?  Then the gourmet burget bar is obviously very intentional.  Just a thought :)

Yum! I could totally go for that. It's not cheap at all and most people would rather have familiar comfort foods than fancy stuff they wouldn't eat otherwise.

Mmm! I agree with making sure you have snazzy looking signage. It will take it up a notch from just a casual backyard bbq.

What kind of toppings would you have? Tons of gourmet cheeses & different sauces? Ohhh my gosh I want a burger so badly! It sounds awesome :)

Wow, I LOVE this idea.  I'm a huge fan of the whole "build-your-own-burger" thing, and I think this idea is EXCELLENT.  I don't thnk it would look cheap in anyway at all.

I just went to a wedding that had this- it was great! They had all these fancy ketchup infusions, tons of fun cheeses, sweet potato fries- SO good. And great salads that went along with it. I was a big fan! (And, I'm a vegetarian- they had portobellos for us, but we still got to pick all the fun toppings). One thing- the buffet line moves a little slower than usual because of all of the options, so you may way to try and account for that somehow.

I say go for it! We're having gourmet sliders, so it'd be a little weird if I said no to this! :)

I think it's fab though, regardless.

Go for it.  There's a huge market for gourmet burgers.  We're planning to check out a new restaurant that opened serving on gourmet burgers.

BTW, FI had the biggest smile on his face when I told him about this.  He loves his burgers.

I choose other because it sounds too messy to me.  I wouldn't want to be picking up burgers with ketchup and other condiments spilling out of them when I'm wearing nice clothes!

i love the idea. i'd just be worried about the messiness - sticky fingers, dripping sauce and juices, a white dress!! argh! maybe if you include big huge bibs for folks? or if you're having a casual wedding.

What a GREAT idea!  And something not toally original, but not totally the "norm" either.  I think that it's a great in-between!

What an AWESOME idea! I have never heard of this. As long as your wedding isn't formal this should work well for you. I also actually like the big bib idea NYBride brought up. That would be fun!

I think this would be totally fun for a casual, laid back vibe!  I definitely wouldn't think that you had skimped on the catering budget--I'd think it was awesome!

Love the idea. We'll have a baked potato bar at ours and I haven't even thought of a burger bar. My biggest complaint with weddings is that the food is usually the bride and groom's favorite... but not anyone elses. (Like clam chowder as the only soup choice?!) Giving guests the option to eat what they'd like, HOW they'd like to is GREAT.

    Love it!

Thanks for all the feedback, guys!  I think it'll fit our wedding well, as it's going to be a little bit "Country chic/modern"...?  I'm excited about it and plan on meeting with the caterer next week.

Great insight about the messines... maybe I'll need to come up with a bib-- for me.  I'm always the one with something spilled down my shirt.  I'd look cute out on the dance floor with a huge ketchup spot on my white dress!

    It sounds amazingly incredible

BUT, I would be concerned about messy fingers and everyone's nice outfits! I'm always super careful at weddings when I eat out. It sounds good but make sure there are lots of napkins and/or maybe some bibs (i know, i know) in case your older guests are concerned. Sometimes a burger is no easy match for an 80 year old woman

But wow. I love it. Mmmm. Gourmet burgers are my fave. all sirloin? rich white cheddar cheese? oh, drool. can i come? =]

I love it! I like being able to customize food, I'm not a huge fan of the one taste suits all at weddings. I like options!

I think it sounds great as long as it wasnt a super fancy wedding, it sounds delicious and offers great options for people that dont eat red meat.  Love the custom ketchup bottles too!!!

Maybe you could do hand wipes the little packets of toweletts but see if they can be customized somehow, this way they will match your wedding and guests can use them to clean up.
