    Hey all!

I just noticed all the new weddingbee categories and immediately thought i should start a grad students thread in here!

Let's get to know who is in grad school, what you are studying, and what stage you are at!

I am in a child clinical psychology PhD program.  I am in my sixth and final year.  I also got my masters in the same program and before that i did my bachelors in psycholgy. So i basically have been in university for a decade now and i am SICK of it!!! sick of being a poor student without a real job. LOL. I am sure there are others who can relate...  Good news is i am on the last stretch. I am currently (supposedly) working on my dissertation and once that is submitted and defended i am done!  i am done all my courses, practica and internships.  My data is collected. so i am really at the analyzing data and writing stage. which i can do from home essentially.  i am also looking for a part time job as i am SICK of being home all the time and we could really use the extra income at this point.

my thesis topic is related to eating disorders and motivation for therapy.

    how about you?!

Nice! I too am a grad student. I will be completing my Master's of Public Accountancy by the end of next Summer (2012). I interned last summer for one of the big 4 firms in NYC, and will start working there next October! Meantime, I am also working on studying for my CPA exam, and also cannot WAIT for it to be over!

I'm in grad school too, actually just finishing my last quarter.  I'm getting a Masters in Education and Teaching Credential for Social Sciences, and I'll finish June 2013.  I'm studying to be a high school history teacher and have taught a bit--including a really amazing lesson yesterday where I made up something on the fly and it went reallly well (the sub showed up without any interest in leading the class!).  My fiancé is also in grad school, which makes life both easier and harder.  He's in his third year of medical school at the same university I'm at.  We don't often see each other (even though we live together) because of our busy schedules, but we understand the demands of our respective programs.  I love grad school!  And I reallllly can't wait to be a full time teacher!

@Ms.GoodEarth:  My fiancé is also in grad school, which makes life both easier and harder.

haha, i can so relate! i met my husband during our masters.  i would say its easiser because we spend a lot of time together in front of our laptops and we understand each other that the work never ends and we actually get to spend a lot of time together this way.   Also, he is in psychology so we have a lot in common in that regard as well.  The harder part is the fact that until a few months ago we were BOTH living on grad student budgets!  he just started his post doc and is getting paid somewhat decent. but for the past 7 years i would say i have seen my grad school friends get married and have babies - all the while living in a nice home, probably because between them and their husband, they could afford it!  not us, LOL.  but of course, i still couldn't be happier than i am being married to him   :)

Hey! I'm a grad school bee too! I'm studying Biological and Biomedical Sciences (more specifically, cancer chemical biology) and am in my 4th year of my Ph.D... I'm hoping to be done by the end of the summer and start my dream of job of teaching high school science! Yeah, what the heck was I thinking getting a PhD for that?! Well actually I realized about halfway through that I don't think research is for me. So needless to say, this coming year is going to be VERY stressful finishing up projects, writing a paper, writing my thesis, job hunting, AND planning a wedding.

Im a grad school bee! I will be completing my Masters of Creative Writing and English Lit in November 2012. Then I hope to go on to do a PhD in the States :) We have just started our summer break here in NZ and it feels SO GOOD to have a bit of a holiday and not have to plod away at my research 24/7. The next semester resumes for us in Feb, but I will be working for a professor on a research scholarship starting in Jan, so I want to make the most of December while I can!

But i think we can all agree that grad students are somewhat masochistic  ;)   i planned my wedding while working full time at my internship, working on my thesis and working part time as a TA for online courses.   good luck!

@earrings: I LOVE NEW ZEALAND!  I went there in 2008 for a month - i guess that was one perk of being a grad student. it was quite easy to arrange my schedule to be able to do this.

I'm in my 2nd year of a phd program in the social sciences. Still taking classes as well as TA-ing, and it's a loooong road ahead--usually takes about 6-7 years in my program, so it'll be at least 4 more years. I took 4 years to work between undergrad and grad school though, so I've been in the "real world" too, and I feel confident that I'm on the right path for me. School is so much work though! I had a fairly demanding, academic job, but it was more 9-5 than school has been. I'm hoping my schedule gets a little less gruelling after I finish my coursework (1 more semester to go!), though prepping for orals (my field's version of comps or prelims) is apparently a nightmare too...

I am in the process of applying to grad school, does that count? I graduated in May and (stupidly) decided to take a year off, so I'm applying for MAs in English and one PHD in English program (which is my first choice, so here's hoping I get in!) I want to teach at the university level and be involved with writing centers.

Both my SO and I are in grad school.

He started in the fall of 2010 and graduated this coming May with a Masters in Math.  He is currently starting to apply for PhD programs.  He also TA's (which is awesome because his school is PAID FOR!)  AND his school is over 2 hours from where I live, meaning we've been in a LDR for 16 months!

I just started my program this fall, I'm getting my Masters in Youth Development Leadership.  Since I'm still working full time and I am 1.5 hours from campus I started out part time this semester, but starting in January I'm going to attempt to be both a full time worker and a full time student.  I hope to graduate in December or 2013 or Spring of 2014.  Wish me luck, because next semester just might come close to killing me (full time both) and my SO (finishing his thesis).

yay, great thread! I'm a grad school bee...currently entering my 5th year of a Neuroscience PhD program (well, i guess it's technically a translational biomedical sciences umbrella program). My thesis is on childhood epilepsy and I hope to work for a pharmaceutical company once I'm done :-)

It's awesome to see so many other (masochistic) grad student bees!

Its a 3 year program and I finish in August (3 weeks before the wedding!)

My thesis is on a vocabulary deficit in children of teen mothers.

So far I've been managing just fine - but this semester I have a class on the acoustics, physics, and neuroscience of voice and hearing - and its making me a littttttttle suidical.

Second year of the hell on earth that is law school.

After I graduate I take the bar then get married....and hopefully never end up being a lawyer. I realized I don't actually want to be a lawyer. Oh, irony.

@Rubies: My best friend did the same thing...it was between being a lawyer or a speech pathologist,,,she was totally 50/50 with both and then decided to go for law because lawyer's make more money. She passed the bar in 2010, worked for a little bit and decided to have a baby and quit her job! The plus side is that you can do ALOT of different things with a law degree...and if you pass the BAR you just proved to yourself that your capable of doing something many others can't!

    Hi *waves*

I'm in grad school for my doctorate of Science.  I'm currently working in a few labs and in the field to collect data for a pilot study which will hopefully be considered important enough to receive funding for a full-blown study.  The department I work for is fantastic and the flexibility is great -- though I can't wait to earn a real salary in the future.

@PurpleUnicorn: that is awesome. I am really interested in your thesis topic :D

I am already in my career field and am so happy where I am working, however my company offers such an amazing MBA program I decided to get my masters.  I am getting my MBA @ National Louis University. I am still in my first year. I am doing a Cohort at my work so we start in the summer and take one class at a time that is 8 weeks long. I wont have my MBA until 2014. :( But Its super convenient and we get a super discount plus tuition reimbursement, I am only paying $4000 for my MBA!! :D

EDIT: oh, and I got my undergrad at the University of Southern Indiana in Computer Information Systems

I don't know if I am actually allowed to be here as I am technically in an in between stage.  My bachelors degree is in psycholoy and I was doing a post grad in person centred counselling to train to be a therapist, however I quit when I found out I was pregnant with our first child.  I work in supported living services for people with schizophrenia, and although it is related to my psychology background, I don't need the degree to work there.  I am so stuck as to what to do next.  I don't regret leaving the counsellign as I had not long started and wanted to give myself up fully to the pregnancy and being a mother.  My husband and I want lots of babies and I really feel like I have to choose between having a career or more babies.  Sorry didn't mean to thread jack lol just randomly venting and feelling slightly jealous that I am no longer studying.  Though being a mammy is the best thing ever.

I'm another law school bee. 3rd year, and I cannot wait for it to be done. Thankfully I front-loaded my classes so my 3rd year is 'relexed' so that wedding planning isn't driving me insane. We're getting married in March just because of Spring Break. So romantic :-P

Hi everyone!  I'm in my 3rd year of pharmacy school :-)  This is my last year of classes and my 4th year will be all rotations.  I planned my wedding for the first weekend after I finish this school year.  I'm taking my first rotation off so we can have a nice honeymoon and plenty of time to relax before all the craziness of my 4th year begins.

@PurpleUnicorn: That topic has always been so interesting to me, expecially when specifically looking at eating disorders in the female athlete populations.  I never stuggled with this but have had a few teammates over the years that have gone fought eating disorders.

Hi all!  I am 24 and earned a BA in psychology and a BA in math education (5-12 grades, with a teaching endorsement in psycolofy as well) in Dec '10.  I am currently in the middle of my second year of a two-year MS program in Statistics.  This semester has been awful!  Amazing, because I got married, but so incredibly busy.  Plus we have our comprehensive exams in January so there goes my winter break.  But it will be SO worth it in the long run.  I am a little on the fence of whether to continue onto a PhD program and teach at a university (very few opportunities for that in MT) or try teaching at the HS level for a while.  I am leaning towards HS because that way I can coach volleyball as well, which is maybe my biggest love after DH of course!

I'm currently applying to grad school! I want to do an online program so I can still work (we live out in the middle of nowhere so there would be a lot of commuting involved otherwise). I graduated in May 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I realized that I prefer working with younger kids and in order to get into the school system around here, you either need a lot of experience or a Master's degree. So I'm going to grad school for Early Childhood Education.

I graduated undergraduate a year early, so even after 1.5 years out, I'm only 22. I feel like I need to go ahead and get more schooling out of the way before we have a family (We are going to start TTC in the Spring).

    Hey everyone!

I decided to drop by and say hi since I'm still a 'grad school' bee, at least for the next 2 weeks. I've been in a neuroscience PhD program for the last 6.5 years. I already turned in my dissertation and my committee approved it (without any major revisions!) and I'm set to defend in 2 weeks. I'm tremedously excited and a wee bit terrified. I've been in school, continuously, for the last 24 years (I'm 27) and can't believe it's finally coming to an end. My next job will be a post-doc at another research university using techniques I think are supercool but I know nothing about, so it should be interesting (if intensely frustrating.) Sort of like grad school. All over again. Yay? ;)

    @MrsWrangler:

Good luck with the application process! If you have any questions about the interview process, let me know. I've worked doing recruitment at my own school, so I've been on both sides.

Just wanted to drop in with some encouragement from the other side - I got my PhD in developmental biology in 2009.  There were definitely times when it felt like I'd be in grad school forever, but all the hard work eventually pays off!  I'm a postdoc now, and since I chose my lab very carefully, it's SO MUCH better than grad school.

@Owlet: Good luck with your defense!  Just remember, if your committee wasn't going to pass you, they'd never have allowed you to schedule everything.  Starting over as a post-doc is tough (just learning where a new lab keeps everything is very humbling), but it's not so bad!

    Yay grad students!

I'm in the 4th year of my PhD program--a joint social-psychology/neuroscience degree. I focus on intergroup relations/stereotyping & prejudice work.

I too went the straight-from-undergrad route and so I'm really hoping next year is the last year of school. We actually planned getting married around the degree--this summer I'll be done proposing the dissertation but not yet started writing so it seems WAY easier to plan a wedding now then next year.

I'm 11 months in to my PhD in Biology (Ecology to be precise). I absolutely love/hate it! haha. I'm not engaged yet but I suspect it will be soon... and we have talked about getting married in October. Mostly because that's the soonest that it would even be possible, based on my fieldwork schedule. (From June to September, I work about 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, outside in corn and soy fields collecting bugs - until I have a mental breakdown or get heatstroke, then I take a day off during which I: a). get drunk or b) cry about how my day off has catastrophically reduced my sample size, then I get back at it. Ah, the life of a field biologist!)

I love it because if I have to be doing a PhD, at least I'm in a lab with a non-sadistic supervisor and a lot of supportive fellow grad students, post docs, and support staff. I hate it because I just have a moral opposition to the idea of working like a slave and I refuse to do it. If this means that by the time I get 5 years in I realize that I haven't done enough work to finish for another 3 years, so be it. I'll quit. I'm not married to the idea of having a PhD, I just got a good scholarship so I went with it. I absolutely can't wait to have kids though, and anyone who so much as gives me a sideways glance about my choice to start my family during grad school is going to get an earful, haha. I've noticed sort of a double standard anyway, grad students without kids are expected to be slaves and love it and not complain. Grad students with kids leave at 4 to pick up their kids from daycare, and absolutely don't come in on evenings or weekends, and aren't expected to do a bunch of extra shit. So I'm pretty excited to be among those ranks. I am a little worried about the prospect of planning for a wedding while doing all this though! I have a feeling decisions are not going to be agonized over and a lot of compromises will be made...
