Have any bees had to go through the hell that is graduate school applications? I'm working on my statement of intent right now and am having major writers block. I feel like everything I say sounds so juvenile.

BLAHHHH I wish I could just do wedding stuff

i'm going through the same thing right now, it stinks! i've gotten over 3/4 of the applications done (a lot are due tomorrow), so it's getting better/i'm almost done, but ugh...such a pain! and we're at the stage of wedding planning where things are nuts--i'm afraid if i put off booking photographers and florists until january, all the good ones will be snatched up!

It was years ago, but I still remember the horror of veterinary school applications. It's going to feel soooooooooooo good when you're finally done!

Thankfully I only applied to one grad school and got in!  I wish you luck on your essays.  Take a break from it and usually it will help you to clear your head and think new things about it.

I hate that damn essay. It was the worst, it took me almost 3 weeks just to start writing it. I never worked so hard on a paper in my life!

Do you have any professors from your undergrad school that loved you?  That's the way I got most of my letters of recommendation.

Yea I have 2 out of 3, but #3 is really bad at communicating and is not getting back to me, which means I have to go to her office tomorrow and kind of confront her about it which is REALLY AWKWARD

Going through this RIGHT now. I freaked out and posted for help multiple times in the lounge. Much helpful! I also asked one of my recommenders and the other one offered to review my personal statement. Being that they read and decide admissions for their programs I found their feedback helpful as well. If yours is due tomorrow, I guess that probably won't work. But definitely have someone review it! I tend to skim everything after I've read it once and don't catch mistakes very well, so it helps to have fresh eyes.

I loved this video called "How to Write a Mission Statement that Doesn't Suck":

    https://www.openforum.com/idea-hub/topics/marketing/video/made-to-stick-writing-a-mission-statement-1

The basics of the video are that you should use concrete language and explain why you care.

I did do those applications several years ago...and it was horrible!  I never had trouble with the statement of intent, but the hardest thing for me was that every school had a completely different application process.  Online, offline, online-offline combo, profs submitting letters online, or individually by mail, or I had to pick up all of them and send them off myself.  It was so confusing and difficult to keep all the requirements straight.  Thankfully I finished, got into every school I applied for, and met FI while trying to pay off my grad school debts!

Hmmmm, I don't remember it being that bad (I'm in my second year of graduate school right now) but I also applied to Columbia and NYU j-school my senior year of undergrad and that was a NIGHTMARE.  So I guess regular graduate school sort of pales in comparison for me ;o)

i hated filling the applications out last year! And then the waiting! Arg! Unfortunately, my undergraduate school ended up screwing up my paperwork and I'm stuck here for another year (well, a semester at this point...). And now i'm thinking of putting grad school off for a few years. I feel burnt out and we're thinking of starting a family.

I won't be going to grad school for a while, and am thinking of taking the GMAT next fall (I graduate in the spring) so that everything is still fresh and will hopefully get a good score, or have time to retake if need be. Good luck everyone!!

@MrsSl82be: You don't really have to take the GMAT right after you graduate.  Most of the information on the test isn't things that you learn in college.  The math is pretty basic, only up to geometry.  And the grammar stuff consisted of things that I learned way back in high school and before.

@ hotchild- columbia and nyu are two of the schools im applying to and they are among the less complicated of the eight applications im doing- im dyingggg

i went to talk to recommendor #3 during her office hours today and she WASNT THERE. soooo i called her office phone and left a voicemail- i am an official student stalker.

still working on statement of intent, i may post some here for critiques.

    glad im not alone!!

@ashleyjane: Yeah, and it s*cked to do all of the work and then get flat-out rejected from both (that's what happened to me!)  I was sad then, but in retrospect, I'm glad I skipped the $40K/year for tuition and went to a CUNY school instead ;o)

What program are you applying to?

Good luck and hopefully you can get a scholarship :o)  The tuition is a total killer, esp. if you went to private school for undergrad like I did!

CUNY's okay.  It's probably not as fabulous as NYU or Columbia but a degree is a degree and I'm getting my money's worth ;o)

I'm at CUNY Baruch for the MA in Corporate Communications program.  I pay the tuition out of pocket every month, so no loans!

Yeah, I think they have speech pathology graduate programs in the CUNY schools.  You also might want to check other public/state schools.  You could save a ton of money.
