Mine included a mandatory 20% gratuity on our bill - so we have no option but to pay! I would ask them for clarification, really!
Yeah, I think I'd check with your event planner or contact person at the caterer to doublecheck on that. I know our contract included gratiuity (20% I think) as part of the total bill. We didn't tip anymore than that, as I figured it was already sufficient.

I was going over the invoice from my caterer, and noticed that they tacked on $279 for gratuity. Then, at the bottom of the invoice, it says "Gratuities are customary, yet optional and always appreciated."
Any idea what that might mean? Is that referring to the gratuity listed as a line-item in my invoice, or an additional gratuity on top of that? Is it expected to provide a tip on top of the gratuity they are already charging? I don't want to over-do it, but also don't want to be cheap on them, either, because they've been awesome so far.
