Don't skip Santorini, which is quite touristy but has the beautiful white churches with blue domes which Greece is famous for. If you like wine there is also a wine museum that has the history of wine-making in Greece and they do tastings as well. I also really enjoyed Athens - so much great fashion, and the food and people were really wonderful!
In terms of what to skip, I found Hydra to be quite boring with dirty beaches and not much else.
My FI and I went to Mykonos & Santorini before we got engaged and they are awesome!
Mykonos is def more of a party place, there the slogan is the "party starts at 3" and on the beaches they start playing music and bring out dancing girls that dance on platforms in the sand. Its not like Cancun because its mostly older people & locals (and by the way Greece has all nude beaches!!) Strangely enough the only people to bare all where old men & women! This island is gorgeous though (personally I thought it was more beautiful then Santorini!) We rented a scooter and had a blast exploring the island. If you want to mix things up between a romantic place & a party place, Mykonos is known as the best party island and we had a BLAST there!
Santorini was much more secluded and romantic, in fact we met several couples on their honeymoons there. They are famous for their black sand beaches, which is really volcanic ash. The island is less populated, but there is a decent amount of tourists. Santorini is famous for their sunset, its supposed to be the most beautiful sunset in the world, and it is, its breathtaking!
The thing we loved about the Greek Islands is the people, the owners of restaurants will stand outside asking you to join them at dinner and are very accommodating. The wine is cheap and all you do is walk into the store and fill up your entire water bottle for like 3 euro! Techno is HUGE there and my FI & I are not techno fans at all, but what is so cool is that there are 2 songs that whenever we hear them they remind us of being there on the beaches, and we'll be playing these songs at our wedding :)
Sorry, I haven't been to Mykonos. For our September honeymoon we had the following 2-week itinerary (we spent several days traveling so the days don't add up to a full 2 weeks)
I highly recommend the ship as well. It's so nice to come back to the same room each night instead of constantly packing and unpacking.
smmcdowell, we're planning for the Greek Islands as well. Any favorites/can't misses/might as well skips amongst the islands you visited. I think we want to spend several days in each place and go to fewer islands. We're definitely planning on Athens and Santorini. Vouliagmeni sounds amazing. I want to go to Rhodes, what did you think? Anything else you recommend?
We did Athens, Mykonos, Santorini and Crete. Mykonos and Santorini are a must!
Fi and I are both Greek American and we've both been to Greece quite a few times so if you have any specific questions (anyone!) feel free to pm me. In general- we have both been to a number of places in Greece (though not together .. yet!). He LOVED santorini... I liked it too but I was a little young to fully appreciate it when I went. It was beautiful though and I hear it's quite the spot for honeymooners.
Personally I LOVE Myknonos- it has the best shopping, people watching, nightlife, and it is simply beautiful! I would say it might not be the best "romantic" spot, though it certainly could be depending on where you stay. I love love love it there. It's definitely worth going for at least a day or two.
While you're in the Cyclades, don't skip Paros! I took a class there for 2 months a few summers ago and it was awesome! Naxos was great too.
If you're looking to spend some time in a really GREEK place, try Ikaria... it's super quaint, quiet, not touristy, and very pretty.
I personally don't like Rhodes very much.. found it very touristy and even though Mykonos and Santorini are as well, it's a different kind of tourism in Rhodes. It doesn't have as "Greek" of a feel.
Obviously spend at least two - or three- days in Athens too. Athens is awesome but do it on the front end of your trip because you'll want to relax after it!
Anyway definitely send me a msg if you want to know anything else... I can recommend food, give general advice, etc! Don't be shy!
evelinej, what did you think of Crete? We have 8-9 days and are thinking of Santorini, followed by Crete, and then Athens. Crete was suggested to us to cut down on travel time between islands, but I wonder if we should look for somewhere else to spend a couple of nights.
Santorini was my favorite greek island, hands down!!! I have a friend to owns an newly renovated apartment they rent out with the most gorgous views right on the caldera, lemme know if you want her info.
I also visited the Hotel Heliotopos while I was there and Mr. Lovebird and I agreed that if we were ever going to renew our vows~ we'd do it there.
By the way, any know where I can get some tomatokeftedes in the city? I'm still craving the ones I had on Santorini...
I will give Santorini another vote, although from what I've seen of Mykonos, it's a contender too!
We are debating between Greece and Italy right now... any suggestions on how to find great little places to stay in Greece? Any good web sites? It sounds fantastic!!
Ok, update... we just had dinner with some coworkers who swear by Santorini and go often, so it's a major possibility. Any suggestions for places to stay? We'd like to do a really nice, romantic place for a couple of nights, then perhaps somewhere more local, or less expensive. Thanks for any ideas!
@meghawkins: i heard wonderful recommendations for Porto Fira, but FI (then BF) and I were there for a graduation trip and just couldn't afford it. http://www.portofira.gr/
Our super-cheap hostel was Hotel Leta, and I liked it for a graduation trip but don't recommend it for a honeymoon - thin walls, college crowd, some logistical problems.
Do be sure to specifically request "one big bed" rather than "two small beds" everywhere you go - we had problems with this, and even with hotel people the nuance of "double bed" versus "twin beds" gets lost in translation.
@meghawkins: congrats on deciding on a honeymoon destination!
We spent a little time at the Heliotopos Hotel and the views are simply amazing!!! The staff also couldn't be nicer.

PM if you are interested in renting a newly renovated apartment right on the caldera. I can try to find out the price/availablity for you from our friend.
Santorini, Crete and don't miss Delos! Delos is the best ;)
Santorini!! I would skip Crete - it has some interesting things to look at and good food, but the beaches are dirty and it's not the most gorgeous place I saw. If you're looking for other mainland stops besides Athens, Delphi is absolutely gorgeous and very quaint.
We honeymooned in Greece for three weeks last summer. We spent time in Athens, Santorini, and Crete.
Santorini is pretty and just like a postcard. It was very relaxing and beautiful. We rented a 4-wheeler, which was wonderful because we could travel around. We visited a few beaches (the white sand beach is by far the best) and a few tasting rooms, which was fun. We had a fabulous stay at Artemis Villas (www.artemisvillas.gr). I highly recommend. The owners are so kind and helpful. All rooms have a private balcony for watching the sunset and for having breakfest (a super yummy breakfast, too!) A few had hot tubs - but we never used ours because it was already hot all day. The dip pool was much better - cool off in the water, read in the sun, repeat. The best part was being away from the buzz of Fira. Ugh - that place is just nothing but turist knick-knacks, bad food, and crowds from cruise ships. It was exactly what we needed when we arrived after the wedding (R&R) and we loved it - but after about three or four days, we were sooooo bored. There's not much to do besides watch the sunset, visit wineries, and look at turisty crap. The beaches really aren't very nice and the ruins are closed (or were last summer). It's a small island, so there's not much to explore.
We LOVED Crete. Herklion is not a great city. We visted Knossos and got the heck out of there. We settled in at Chania/Xania/Hania and didn't want to leave. It's not super turisty, which we liked. We stayed on the old harbor, in the Venetian area. The buildings are beautiful. The food is great (if you don't eat on the boardwalk). The prices are soooo much less than Santorini. We stayed at the Hotel Amphora. Nothing fancy, but comfortable. The owners opperate a restaurant below - it's the only one I would recommend eating at on the boardwalk. A really nice beach is just a ten-minute walk. The city is very photogenic. We also took a day trip to Elfonisi (sp?) in the SW corner. SUCH a beatiful beach! We had also intended on hiking Sumari gorge and spend a couple of nights in the mountains, but my husband was sick (he got salmonilla in a US airport on the way there! Can you believe it!). We really want to return to Crete some day.
Athens was OK. Go at the end to see the major archeological sites and museaum. They are worth it, but the rest of the city is so-so. We first stayed at the Central Hotel... The view from the roof terrace was great, the location wonderful, the price reasonable... but the staff had major attitude and the rooms were chic but small and awkward. The second time we were at the Hotel Omiros. Nothing fancy, a little dated, but less expensive and much nicer staff (and litterally on the same street, so just as convenient). Spend at least one night in Athens so you can see the acropolis lit up - it's breath taking! And visit the acropolis early - be there a little before it opens! It is hot and crowded!
My only other tip is to fly between islands if possible. The ferry from Athens to Santorini was really long. I'm glad we had one ferry ride, just to have experienced it... but I wish it would have been a shorter ride. We splurged on the flight from Chania back to Athens and it was worth every penny to get there in two hours rather than 10 or whatever it would have been.
