We're getting married on May 23 2010 and are having trouble deciding between Hawaii (Maui and Kuaii) or the Greek Islands. We're looking for gorgeous beaches (not just to look at but to sit on and swim), great food, spas, and not outrageously expensive. Any suggestions? Anyone have any ideas which location would be less expensive? Thanks!

Wow! I agree with crebre80... that's an awesome problem to have! We're going to Hawaii for our honeymoon because it is so, so, so much cheaper... but I've been to the Greek Islands and they are absolutely beautiful and you can definitely swim there! Good luck making your decision!

P.S. I took this picture when we were on one of the beaches in Greece... Just look at how beautiful the water is. But this picture really doesn't do it justice!

I was tryinig to decide between Santorini and Maui and Maui won b/c of the exchange rate and weather (it'll be in the high 80's in Maui as opposed to low 80's in Santorini and June is the least rainy month in Maui). If we went to Santorini, it would be cooler and we would lose around $3,000 b/c of the exchange rate.

Well, here's a though. Do you want to do alot of sightseeing? Or do you just want to chill out? Greece has alot of history and unless you plan on doing the "GO GO GO" thing, it's not really a VACATION! It's more of a trip...you do alot more sightseeing and don't really have much down  time unless you want to miss something.

Hawaii, however, is super chill. Have a drink, watch people dance at a luah... lua..luau...(WTF?! I don't know how to spell it) , go hiking at a leisurely pace. We'll be doing Paris on our honeymoon, but we're also not doing it til 9 months after the wedding after he's done with school. If your wedding planning is going to be super stressful, I'd recommend Hawaii..just a nice time to relax!

I've been to both.  They are both expensive.  Greece I would say is probably less expensive though once you actually get there and you would probably be able to find cheaper things to do there.  Maui is where we went for our honeymoon and it is hard to find things to do there that don't cost a lot.  The whole island is based on tourism, so everything there costs a lot.

Getting to Greece might cost you a lot.   You'll have to take a couple flights probably, and then generally take a 9 hour ferry ride to get to Santorini.  Getting to Maui can cost a lot too though.  We went in October and paid $850 each for our flight to Hawaii.   You are just going to have to do a lot of research to figure out which one will cost you less for the time you want to go.  I think it will boil down to which one costs you less to get to.  I also think Greece has cheaper accommodation than Hawaii, even with the poor exchange rate!

Hawaii probably has better spas than Greece.  Maui has the amazing spas at the resorts like Grand Wailea, but you are going to pay a ton.  Greece probably has better beaches for swimming because in my opinion the waves there are less tumultuous (Some of the beaches in Hawaii had really strong currents and were dangerous to swim in).  But many of the beaches in Greece were not very sandy in the actual water part, so basically you end up slipping around and falling on a flat rocky bottom.

What do you want for your honeymoon?  Do you want to feel like you are in a different culture or still in America?  In both places you can have great food and great sunny beaches.  It just depends if you want to be around Americans and eat great American food, or be surrounded by a different culture and experience great Greek food.

I've never been to Greece but I will say that Hawaii is beautiful and has a lot of culture and history as well.  You just have to go off the beaten path.  I recommend a smaller island like Maui or Lanai even.  There is actually quite a bit you can do for cheap but again you just need to get out of the cities.  Rent a car and take a drive whatever island you choose.  There are waterfalls, volcanoes, black/green/white sand beaches and the sky is beautiful.

We're struggling between Europe and Hawaii as well.  I think we are going to end up with Hawaii as we want to do more of a sightseeing trip when we go to Europe and that isn't very conducive to a honeymoon.  Hawaii is easy to see the sights in a coupledays and then relax.

I'd so go to Greece in a heart beat! Couldn't afford it though, but it looks amazing and I'd love to eat the authentic Greek food and see the sights and stuff!

omg! Greek Islands hands down!  Though i love touring thru the America's, i would love to see the ancient history of Greece, see a totally different culture, hear people speaking in other tongues (ok ok Hawaii has the last two also!) but come on!  i think hawaii is do-able anytime whereas Greek Islands is a once in a lifetime adventure!

    future mrs. Q    6/5/10

I am getting married 6/5/2010 & we were having the same problem! We ending up deciding on Maui/Kauai as opposed to the Greek Islands.  I'll give you some of our reasons why & hopefully it'll help.

Hawaii would be more relaxing.  Greece is more sightseeing/on-the-go

I wouldn't have to exchange $$$ into Euro's and/or get an new passport to go to Hawaii.

I did TONS & TONS of research and I think overall Hawaii came out to be cheaper.

Language barrier! My fiance has travelled all over Europe and said that the language barrier can be really tricky & frusterating which is exactly the opposite of what I personally want on my honeymoon.  You never really know what you are ordering / how to get around, etc.

I'm hoping to get to the Greek Islands for a wedding anniversary at some point but think that Hawaii would be more relaxing overall.  Either way - both places would be amazing! I think it just depends on what "type" of honeymoon you both want!

Personally I'd probably pick Greece, for all the history that's there. Though if you want to relax, I'd second what others have said and pick Hawaii. It doesn't have to be expensive..especially if all you want to do is hang out on a beautiful beach :)

My Fiance and I have been to both Hawaii and the Greek islands, and have found that you can have a relaxing and affordable (if you wanted to) time in both places. We are actually deciding between these two destinations for our own honymoon!! I would probably have to recommend Greece in terms of affordability (even with the exchange rate), culture, and food. The beaches are amazing there lots of places to swim. I'm not so sure about the spas, since we didn't look into that... We went to Mykonos and it can be relaxing if you want to do nothing but lay on the beach, but there is lots to do if you don't! You can rent a vespa/scooter for less than 10 Euros/day to get around the island and explore all of the best beaches.

Hawaii was a whole different kind of paradise but we did find if pricier in general. Our package of hotel and flight was reasonable but we found food to be expensive. Beaches were some of the most beautiful in the world and the long flight is definitely worth it! We looked into a spa day but found them to be quite expensive.

So to sum up, you will have a FANTASTIC time whatever you pick - Hawaii and Greece are my two personal favourite places in the world!! Both have great beaches, really friendly people, and amazing culture. However, Greece would get my vote!!

Thank you for starting this thread! I am having the same difficulty deciding between the two (Greece has always been a dream destination for me, but I wasn't sure if we could afford it). The replies on here have been extemely helpful!

I can't believe everyone is saying Santorini is less expensive than Maui!! Did anyone take finance?? I was comparing a less nice hotel in Santorini to the 4 Seasons Maui. And Maui is about 1/2 the cost! You lose so much from the exchange rate, it's ridiculous. Of course, if you have the money to spend, Santorni is probably more exciting and grand as it is a greek islalnd, but seriously, the dollar fell even more on Friday.

Greece!  I heart Santorini! So romantic - and not all the rooms are overpriced!! We happened on this hotel:

    http://www.chelidonia.com/

Erika and triantefillos (probably butchered the spelling, sorry!) are the friendliest proprietors, and he built all the little houses from volcanic rocks himself!  The views were amazing! Food on santorini is just to die for! Their cherry tomatoes are sooo good! Seafood is so delicious too! And kebabs for 2 euros, that's a deal!

We went during the "shoulder" season, early oct - it was getting a bit cold to swim.  But renting scotters and puttering around the island is a good idea!
