Are you determined to buy them? My FI's sister got married this summer, and they all rented them from Men's Wearhouse. You could rent something like this: http://www.menswearhouse.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10051_10002_10601_130951_-1_10002_Base_10651_?cm_vc=40168. I'm sure you could do just vests/pants and work it out with the store.
EDIT: I should note that they wore grey suits, that's what made me think of it :)
You still have time to wait, Express constantly has sale. What kidn of fit are the guys though? Express tends to run very slim fit.
Banana Republic also has tons of grey suits often.
i was going to suggest mens warehouse too if you arent against renting.
they have awesome gray suits and your dudes in Cali can get fitted there :)
@NauticalBride2011 and @totheislnds: We aren't totally against renting, however, when we went to Men's Warehouse they said they only vested suit (we do want suits, not tuxes... more of a casual wedding) they have in the shade of grey we're looking for is $400 total, no option to break up the suit/vest/pant combo, and has pleated pants. I'd prefer that the vest and pant be the same material and shade of grey like in the express combo I shared in my first post. I know... I'm really specific... I but I swear it exists!
I'm hoping for the sale, @Gerbera, because they're all thin and at least 6' tall, so they have an ideal fit.

Im doing grey suits as well, My groomsmen are wearing just pants and vests (and shirts duh) but we got ours from J.Crew. the vests and pants is 180 but there is a student/teacher discount as well. Its called faded black but it looks completely grey in person.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I do love Banana and JCrew, but unless we get discounts (much like the Express ordeal) I don't think they're within our price range. The "faded black" would definitely be interesting to see in person @Mrs.Williams! It looks closer to khaki on my screen, but faded black wouldn't be an appropriate name for that, would it? :)
I'll have to check out the proper suit. I've seen that posted in a few places but I guess it'll pay to inquire about our wedding party since I see such a big difference in price on their site vs. what was said here.

Its not khaki in person. The pants came like 2 days after we ordered it and it is totally grey I dont know why it is called faded black. It looks grey with really subtle stripes because its "faded" but it looks perfectly light grey for my wedding which is the look I wanted. and the discounts definitely help.
If there is another Men's Warehouse location near you, I'd try again (or maybe talk to another person if there isn't). We're doing the tux that NauticalBride linked, and it was $160-ish for everything down to cufflinks (although we are providing shoes and ties), and they have a $30 off promotion they're running if they guys sign up for a free "Perfect Fit" rewards-type program. I was told it's the only grey suit that Men's Wearhouse currently has for rental, and I made sure the pants were flat-front (pleats = yuck! heehee!), so one of us was lied to! =) They also told me that we could rent what we wanted, and the price went down for each item we didn't get. I suppose the policies might vary by store/location, but we seem to have had exact opposite experiences! Maybe if you told them what other locations are offering they'd be willing to work with you a bit? Worth a try anyway... Good luck!!!
My husband got his from H&M. Their suits are pretty affordable; I know we got him another one from there that was $100 Cdn for the jacket and pants. But you would have to go to one of their bigger stores, as the smaller ones don't often have good suiting choices!
We got the Alfani Red from Macy's just a few weeks ago. All total, I think it was just under $150 for the suit pants and vest. Looks great, too!

I'm actually looking for the same thing, only in a khaki color rather than light grey. I'm trying to avoid the pleated pants and shiny vest look you get when renting. From what i've seen, the best bet would be to try H&M. J.Crew is nice but H&M would be more affordable. Most of the vest/pants I've seen have come from there. That's where I plan to have the men go in a month or so.
I just wanted to add a little P.S. to my post- I saw the suits from Men's Wearhouse that I'm getting (that NauticalBride linked) modeled at a bridal show this weekend, and they are gorgeous! A thousand times better than the photos. =)
I thoguht about H &M... But I guess the three that we have in St. Louis are smaller stores, as I've never seen the kinds of suits we would need. Thanks for your help, everyone!
@cleverbetty: I'm looking for the EXACT same thing as you! Check out http://us.topman.com/ for nice suit separates for a little less than Express and a little more (and better quality) than H&M. We bought our groomsmen's pants there and I think we'll get our vests there too.
The gray available for rent at MW is a tuxedo. The pants have a satin stripe down the leg, and the vest isn't in the same fabric (it's satin). They don't rent suits, although many independents do-- call around and see.
We bought 12 grey suits from Mens Wearhouse! They were having an awesome after-Christmas sale where it was buy one, get one free so it ended up being about $189 per suit. Maybe you can check to see if they are going to have another sale that is similar. Or, you can try talking to the manager to see if they will give you a similar deal.
I was actually at H&M today and they had gray vests and pants that my fiance tried on. vest and pants were each $29.99. They may not be the best quality but they look great for one day. If you go on the H&M website and check stores in your area, it should tell you if they carry the full men's line or not. Good

we went to H&M 2 weeks ago and they have grey suits!! and they have ones with vests too! they were so cheap! the only thing that stopped us from getting it was because 2 of the GM are 6'4" and would not fit in H&M. i even took a pic of the price tag! lol $59.95 for jacket, 34.95 for pants, and they even had cheap shirts. the one i have a price for is a colored shirt $14.95. and they have skinny ties which i love!!!! only for 12 bux.
kohls also has light grey slim fit suit right now. and it's buy one get 1 free! with 6 ppl... it came to about $150 each... but again the guys are too tall for the pants.
