It's funny the sorts of things you fight over/quibble about.  Last night, Fi was UTTERLY AGHAST when I squashed my grilled cheese sandwich in the pan.  I didn't realize that this was so out of the ordinary.  He also makes fun of my love of American cheese, but that's another poll.

So how 'bout it, Bees.  Provide me with some scientific backup here.  Do you squash your grilled cheese or keep them as high as possible?

I usually don't squash it when I flip it or pull it out unless I'm being impatient and want it to hurry up the burning process.  I love burnt grilled cheese sandwiches Laughing

@Miss Longcoat: I am so anal about my grilled cheese. This is going to sound stupid. I lightly fry each side in a pan to get it golden brown and then put into a preheated oven to melt the cheese the rest of the way. It's the only way I can keep them fluffy, not burned and ensure the cheese is melted.

@Miss Longcoat: Oh if you are ever adventurous and don't mind the cholesterol, make your grilled cheese like this: butter the outside of the bread with garlic butter and press it into shaved parmesan cheese, then fry. You get crispy cheese on the outside and melty gooeyness on the inside.

I stole this photo from the interwebs (we don't cut off our crusts, thank you very much), but DH's family gave us this exact sandwich press as a gag Christmas gift one year...and it's probably gotten more use than any other gift they've ever given us.

who on earth thinks grilled chees is ridiculous.  I'm offended by the thought!  My grandmother used to butter both sides of the bread. Why on earth does it even need butter inside...that part doesn't even get toasted!

Squash it to bits! The flatter the better.

Then I dip it in ketchup. *don't judge me, it's delicious!*

I always thought you had to squash it, in order for it to melt the cheese all the way.  Until I realized that if you put a lid on the pan, it melts the cheese without have to squash it.  So now, I eat unsquashed grilled cheese.  DH doesn't care though. He will eat it no matter what.

Mmmm, grilled cheese sounds good right about now.

I just love grilled cheese especially with soup! Doesn't matter the kind, as long as its cheesy and crispy. Oh and I like sneaking a couple strips of bacon inside too

I don't squash it. I cook it over very low heat for like 5 minutes on each side, under it's golden and crispy on the outside, and the cheese has time to melt. It drives my SIL crazy though, because she's impatient.

I don't squish mine....my favorite is on multi-grain (or as I call it, million grain) bread, with sharp cheddar (grated and mixed with a bunch of stuff-Grandma's recipe), then a little dijon on the bread and drizzle of honey.......then cook. Delish!

I like mine burned but not squashed. Needless to say...my grilled cheese takes a long time to cook haha.

Also, am I the only person in the world who is inept at making grilled cheese? I can never get it to cook right...either it burns and sticks to the pan, or it falls apart when flipping because I didn't cook the first side long enough. No matter how high/low the burner, what pan, how much/little butter, nonstick spray or no, big spatula, little spatula...I just can't do it. Luckily FI is an awesome grilled cheese maker and doesn't mind making it for me :)

No squashing is ideal, but squashed is better than no gc at all.

i squash it, but only because i tend to put other stuff in there that tends to fall out  and be too tall to eat without the squishing. if you're wondering what those other things are, thinly sliced granny smith apples and extra thick bacon go amazingly inside grilled cheese. :3
